No no, don't start cheap you will get discouraged or will be upgrading within a year. I play and highly recommend Schecter C1 plus if you must buy new and should be able to be had for $550-$600 For the same you should be able to get an american strat or telecaster from a pawn shop. You don't need a fancy amp, I've been using the same fender super reverb or something like that for the past 10 years and it's been a work horse.
