  1. I don't think anybody is disputing that tesla owners are "car people" or that speed sells. I think the mfgs just want to own the revenue stream from the space. The aftermarket will still produce wheels and brake kits and such, but engines/trannies/superchargers/nitrous will see a decline as electrics become more common and what will it be replaced with? There is already a problem with mfgs, warranties, and aftermarket parts - if they gained control over the aftermarket through an app store style setup, then how much of an aftermarket is there really?

     

    what I meant by electric car culture is smart phone culture - is that Tesla looks at its cars like rolling smart phones, where as all the established automakers look at electrics as cars first. Because of that Tesla is able to innovate and get adoption by non car people who also want customization and not soulless transportation - afterall, smartphones aren't soulless and their culture is all about personalization and personal expression. The problem with Tesla looking at their cars as giant smart phones is that cars have a ton of consumer protection laws for a lot of reasons (99% of them being the past super shady business practices of mfg's and dealers) and Tesla is actively working on ways to get them to not apply to it's cars.

     

    So my comment on apps was less to do with performance mods, and more to do with enabling little value added features with hardware/data available, like Tesla does with security cams, pet modes, fart noises, etc.

     

    The reason Tesla is able to treat the car more like a smartphone than a traditional automaker has everything to do with their vehicle electrical architecture than a diverging business plan when compared to traditional automakers. The traditional automakers what to do to same thing, but they are much slower to change due to a combination of legacy implementations and sourcing agreements. The old dogs are catching up though...

I think this is how they mfg's are going to make up for the revenue lost from selling parts since electric vehicles don't have that many parts and the few they have basically total the vehicle.     - Right to repair is going to go away almost overnight since even if you are the most magical coder in the world, the mfg can just brick your car if it determines you tampered with the code without authorization.

    I disagree on some points. A lot of people that have bought Tesla's ARE car enthusiasts, but in many cases it's not their only vehicle, they love the performance (acceleration and handling), and are fed up with traditional dealership experiences. If people just wanted soulless transportation there would be no market for Ludacris or Plaid. People were buying Tesla's instead of BMW 7's and Mercedes S-Class's, and it wasn't for any luxury on the interior.

     

    There are some automakers looking to allow outside app development (I think it was Stellantis that made an announcement to this). I assume it will be treated like the Apple App Store where the OEM takes a cut.

     

    I dont agree with what Tesla has done with reclaiming features the original owner paid for. Part of the vehicles value is based on how its equipped, especially when you have a $7-10k option like FSD. There's a gray area with something like Clay's vehicle though with lifetime free Supercharging. Since I dont think that's on the Monroney, I think they could treat that as a benefit to the original buyer, like a non-transferable extended warranty or service plan and take it away. It depends on the legal jargon attached to it. Not quite as bad as BMW making heated seats a subscription, but still shady.

     

    What you'll definitely see is features like FSD, Supercruise, BlueCruise, etc require a data plan to keep them active. So they will get you on a subscription plan, but it's not the same as charging a second owner $10k for the option all over again.

  4. He does it through U-ship I guess....probably for liability reasons and whatnot - I bet that would make it competitively quite expensive that long of a haul.
    Yeah, I went through UShip to get my Z here from SoCal...ended up costing ~$1400 for an open transport, though also needed to be winched on to the truck, so they add $100 for that.

    Yeah, the Silverado, Hummer, and F150 are/will be full size trucks. The Hummer is huge. Of course, the Hummer is in a different price class, but the Silverado and F150 will compete closely on price.

  6. Rivian's HQ is in Detroit, their plan is in Normal IL (old DSM plant), and quite a few from the auto industry in central Ohio went to work for Rivian. From what I can also gather, they seem to be allowing some employee's to use/drive the cars on long trips, probably as a kind of test. I think they are going to use the Electrify America chargers, so I imagine they are seeing how long distance trips with their cars on that network work.

    Not too far fetched to think someone is back in Central Ohio who worked in the auto industry here is now working for Rivian and back visiting friends or family.

    True, although they have moved a lot of development and engineering from suburban Detroit (Plymouth). Employees were given the option of transferring to Irvine, CA or leaving. If you saw the Instagram of the guy driving his Rivian from Plymouth to Orvine while towing his Mustang, he was doing this trip because his job was moved.

     

    I'm sure they'll still have a presence in the Detroit area due to suppliers and support (they announced an investment to expand Plymouth to add a 24 hour customer support staff, and they claim an investment in Dearborn for a design center), but it's not HQ anymore.

    Yeah, and GM is already delivering Hummer EV's to customers while people still wait for that abomination from Elon.

    Looks like the RST Launch Edition "sold out" in 12 minutes.

     

    I know the need to have a EV Truck in the market, but I also kinda wish there was a 7 passenger SUV version of this to rival the Rivian R1T and R1S. Not everyone needs a truck bed and it wouldn't be too hard to do. People are already spending big money for the Expedition, Escalade, Grand Wagoneer, and the Rivian R1S is the only large SUV that's even been announced. If it could be done in the $60-80k range the Trail Boss was rumored to fall into I think they'd have a winner.

  10. I heard about this on one of my daily emails and thought "There's GM, rushing to market with a half-baked product." after seeing how impressive the F-150 Lightning was. Man, this actually looks great with the Avalanche midgate option too.

     

     

     

    Just skimmed through this article, and as much as I crap on post-gubmint-bailout gm this is an impressive vehicle. Didn't even think of the platform-sharing with the new Hummer EV. This thing will be a hit. Front end is still hideous as always.

    Chevy or Ford, the consumer wins with these new EV trucks. Will be intadesting to see if the products live up to the hype and the numbers the OEMs put up.

    When I saw this thing as a clay model a few months ago I was unsure about the exterior styling theme. Ford used the same sheet metal as the ICE F150 and that definitely saved some cash and might not alienate their traditional customer.

     

    However doing a clean sheet design has its perks. It has a ton of nice features (multifunction tailgate, midgate, tons of outlets for equipment, SuperCruise...) and they were able to move the front seats farther forward (rear seats have 4" more leg room than the F150!). I think the Chevy interior looks nicer, but Ford will have a clean sheet EV truck out around 2025 too. From the pics it looks like the F150 frunk might be a little bigger, but both the Chevy and Ford have a leg up on the Rivian there.

     

    I think the blue RST trim they showed looks pretty good, but the WT looks horrible (probably a poor choice in acronym too for the cheapest model). But hopefully a lot of the WT's will end up vinyl wrapped with some business graphics all over it.

     

    While it will get compared to the F150 a lot, you also have to figure that a major target is Rivian. They said there will be several different price points for the Silverado and the RST launch edition is fully loaded. With the WT at $40k I'm assuming there will be a ~$60k model that's decently equipped that will go toe to toe with the R1T.

I'm gonna see how far I can get on the 300ZX project this year...not sure I'll have it running by the end of the year, but definitely want all the paint, bodywork, interior, and maybe some brakes/suspension finished by year end. Everything depends on how much the paint/bodywork is going to hit the budget...

  12. Why the cut out on the bottom with the woodworking loft as an overhang? Why not box that all in? Is there enough storage in the garage for all your other stuff, or are you going to end up filling the lift area with stuff (bikes, mower, etc)? Is there room for a decent side toolbox? Wired for a EV changer? Need an air compressor? Dust collection for wood tools?

  13. What should I do differently here?

     

    Some considerations.

    We are limited by site constraints as well as city code. Code dictates <15' high and <720sqft. We'll likely be asking for variance on both, but have to be considerate about what will or won't pass. Height seems like not a huge issue, size (plus plumbing plan) seems more difficult at the local level.

     

    Additionally we want it to work (very) well with our site, future plans as well as architectural match the house. This means a lower roof pitch parallel to the road, as well as ~19' max height. The current house peak is around 19.5'. We want to keep a pass through to the back yard. We also want a bathroom, height for a lift & lofted workshop space.

     

    I've made some rudimentary sketches to coalesce my ideas as well as facilitate conversations with construction and architectural firms about feasibility.

  14. Good luck. We're not going to slow the spread and 2 years is proving that. Many would argue we're doing more harm than good too. We have therapeutics, vaxes and plenty to run with to help. Time to leverage them and learn to live with our newly introduced risk. Thanks China. I agree that the burden on hospitals can be bad. Let's work to ensure there are no unnecessary ones being put on them but then we've seen some mandates do just that......all in the name of science right? Best thing every single person can do is to be smart, get healthy and heal the divide. Continuing to argue and threaten isn't going to do that nor build trust in anyone that calls themselves a leader.

     

    "Slowing the spread" is about managing hospital capacity and supplies. Many hospitals up her have been at capacity since early December, trying to transfer people to other regional hospitals and having no luck. Monoclonal antibody treatments are in short supply and people can't get them. Two therapeutic pills have been approved now, but there is no supply built up. None of this is the result of any mandates, and all could be improved by lowering the number of active cases.

     

    I'm not advocating for everything to close down and everyone to stay home. There is a difference between "living in fear" and managing risk.

  15. The discussion should not be a binary dead vs alive. There are millions of people with "Long COVID" or serious, possibly life long side effects from their battle with COVID. Heart conditions, blood clots, lung damage, etc. This also makes them more susceptible to severe outcomes in a second or third infection.

     

    Maybe Franklin County is doing well, but here in MI we have had some of the highest numbers of people hospitalized this last month since the beginning of this. Over 90% of ICUs were/are people who were unvaccinated. Luckly the hospitalization numbers started to go down a little, but cases are still going up (this trend is probably due to Omicron taking over). My county is running around 26% positivity and 80 cases per 100k.

     

    My wife's cousin is a doctor in Grand Rapids and there are some bat-shit-crazy ideas people have when they show up to the ER about why they're not vaccinated, or why this whole pandemic is fake.

     

    IMO, being physically fit seems to have very little to do with how COVID effects you, unless you have diabetes, heart disease, asthma, as a result of that. There are athletic people in their 30's and 40's who have gotten this and have long term effects, can't even climb a flight of stairs, now have a heart condition, or even died. Yes, based on demographics the risk of death is lower in this age group.

     

    My kids friend, 7 years old, who ended up with MIS-C and almost died several times over the course of a week has to see a cardiologist at UofM every 6 months now. The doctor said of all the MIS-C kids he is monitoring he is the ONLY one who is currently not showing any lasting heart damage. Yes, the numbers are lower in his age demographic, but there are kids living with the long term effects and are more susceptible when re-infected. The doctors told this kids parents that had he come in to the hospital in that condition 6 months earlier he would have died, but they are learning how to treat this better. Slowing the spread buys time to learn how to treat cases, to develop new treatments, to create stock of and distribute these treatments, and lower the burden on the hospitals resources.

  16. So far everything he’s liked he has to tether to the pc but he’s just starting out. I’ll look into a cord but I’m not paying 70 for one and he’s out of money. I gave him one of my usb a to c cords but its only 6’.
    What kind of games does he like?

     

    So far my usual games are:

     

    Crisis VRigade 2 (it's like the old arcade game Time Crisis)

    Vader Immortal 2 and 3 (I just play the lightsaber dojo)

    CREED (on sale today, though this can get pretty physical)

     

    Other games that most people start out with:

     

    Super Hot (hadn't played in a while but started some of the challenges recently)

    Beat Saber (rhythm games are love it or hate it)

    Pistol Whip (think if it like a shooting version of Beat Saber)

    Rec Room (free, has a lot of mini games inside it)

    Space Pirate Trainer (shooting game where you shoot at different targets, use different weapons and use power ups. It has an arena mode...but to use that you need a 30x30 space and 2 people with headsets)

     

    A lot of people seem to like Pavlov Shack too, but start with the free demo. Everything else mentioned above keeps you fairly stationary, but things like Pavlov has you moving through the environment. If that doesn't make you motion sick then there are a whole lot of other games to try out.

  17. Yes, there is an Oculus specific cord. Last I looked it was like $70. I don't use one of those, I use a generic USB C 3.1 cord. On my video card I have a USB C 3.1 port, so that's what I connect the oculus to. You'll have to see what options he has to connect. The port on the quest is a USB C, but he may not have that available on his PC.

    You can get a USB A to USB C cable if he doesn't have a C port on his PC. Just make sure the standard is at least USB 3 or 3.1 I would look at the Amazon reviews though and see what people are saying about the cord with an Oculus. I bought one of the cheaper cords up front ($20) and it didn't work for long. Just don't buy a cheap cable, it probably won't work. I recommend buying one with a 90 degree end so it doesn't stick straight out.

     

     

     

    Another option that might work would be wireless tethering. There is an app called Oculus desktop ($20). It was a little tricky to get it running wireless, but if you have fast strong wifi where he is using the oculus that might work for you as well.

    I don't tether to my PC, so I'm not much help here, but everything I've heard from others on YouTube and Oculus groups agrees with this. I'm worried about the cable putting stress on the plug and ruining the USB port, so I would try wireless first with Virtual Desktop.

     

    You could also try using the Oculus Air Link, but I'm not sure if it's out of Experimental Features yet. This is FB's attempt to kill Virtual Desktop.
