check your advanced firewall settings incoming and outgoing. i had the same problems when i first built my server and I couldnt get them to do anything either. you can also check if this is a firewall setting by turning off your firewall and trying to share. if you can then you have a setting in firewall that needs set.

NO i didnt say that...Im just saying that when a program needs to access data from the disk, it first checks the disk cache to see if the data is there. Readyboost caches the info and accessing a byte of data in RAM can be thousands of times faster than accessing a byte on a hard disk.

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=is+vista+more+secure+than+osx%3F&aq=f&oq= i am not tyring to argue about security. i have ZERO experience with mac as i had just avoided them for years. so please take this bias opinion with a grain of salt. page 2 of the link has mac engineers stating vista has less holes than osx in the code. what that also means is OSX has a heavy following and gets exploited more than windows (partly because windows has been beaten the hell up for years) and mac is gaining some serious momentum. on another note i would like to try a mac sometime so i can make a more compelling arguement on OSX.

i do know what i am talking about. i just meant no more service packs as mainstream support is done in april of this year. all they will be releasing from april forward is security updates. you are 100 percent correct on support until 2014. when i said no longer supported i was just referring to no mainstream support to better the OS (besides security fixes). i am at work and busy and i made an assumption that some of you might not know all the caviats with vista etc. that is my fault and i am by no means trying to say that anyone is retarded. i was just trying to save myself from having to explain the explanations. basically im not trying to argue over a forum my point of view. OS likes and dislikes are subject to personal opinion anyway and depends on the users experience or comfort level.

it is easier on resources. i have only seen the beta for a few minutes. i wish i could play with it a little. maybe my attitude would change a little in favor of 7 instead of vista.

if you are worried that much about security...you would have made a standard user account to run at all times instead of running admin account all the time thereby prompting ou for password...OR change the policy to always prompt for approval in admin mode.

adding RAM may have been a bad choice of words. yes it is a cache not actual ram. but accessing cache is faster. readyboost also spinsdown disk access by accessing the cache instead and saves laptop battery. if you are not being prompted to enter a password...then turn your UAC back on.

oops yes i meant windows. i was not bashing linux or even OSX. i am speaking directly towards windows.

i have a laptop with 2gb RAM that is more than capable of running ultimate with NO problems at all. plus readyboost it sits at 6gb RAM. even if i dont have the flash drive plugged in i can do just about anything i want to. my only complaint is my NIC is slow. not vistas fault.

who is the rest of the industry? if it sucks so bad then why is XP and all legacy OS's no longer being supported? vista is more secure than mac OSX. the only thing you can complain about is the fact that it is a memory hog...BUT readyboost solves that by adding an extra 4gb of RAM by plugging in a flash drive with fast memory (which most on the market have right now) 8gb sticks with fast flash are 20 dollars. readyboost is faster than standard memory anyway.

for those of you who are saying vista sucks...you dont know how to use it. it is way better than all the previous OS's.
