I though if you had the EFI model, you just spliced in some of the B6T wiring harness and bumped up the fuel pump to something better. '88 is Carb, B6T swap is gonna be a lot of work since it's the non-EFI model. festivamotorsport.com has a lot of cheap parts for them though.

I've heard it. I'd have to say a +1 for a loose torque converter bolt.
None of the motor mounts seemed loose, though checking them would be a good idea.

Not sure on the HP figures at the wheels, being that it's untuned, you could always get a little more outta it with some good tuning.
As far as launching goes, be easy on it with that 3 bolt rear end, they don't like (or can't hold up to I should say) much beating on. 4 bolt rears are hard to find, and it's an auto, so the final drive is different.
