  1. Hi All,

Appreciate your help! Especially those of you with old batteries laying around the garage.

The weather was so nice that I got antsy and bought something Thursday afternoon. Fortunately, the kind dudes at Interstate Batteries on Cleveland Ave hooked me up with a refurbished Miata battery for just $39. Sweet deal.

Had a great cruise to Hocking Hills today in the sunshine. Amazing that she started on the first crank after 3 years on blocks.

  2. Long time no post!

I'm back in Columbus for the weekend and want to get my old Miata running again. The car's been sitting for 3 years, and the battery is more-than-dead.

Since I'll just be using the car for 4 days, I don't quite want to spend $120 for a new battery at AutoZone. Any chance one of you have a spare laying around your garage that I could buy? Ideally it would be a Miata battery, but I suppose any 12v would do.

Located in Clintonville here. Call/text at (312)391-1926 or get me on here.

  3. I dont have a ad up for this car yet

Right. I had just seen your mention in this thread: http://www.columbusracing.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1626283#post1626283

Honestly looks like a great deal! The kind of car I would go for, but thinking a Japanese or American one for him. Thanks!

Also should have specified earlier: automatic transmission.

Checked out a Protege this morning. Found some type of suspension issues and oil all over the subframe (CV joint?). Yikes. Still looking.

  4. Up for sale is my Canon S95 underwater setup. I bought this kit specifically for a trip to Guatemala and Belize where I would be taking lots of rainforest/underwater photos. The camera performed flawlessly on vacation, I took 1500 exposures with it, and now it’s ready for a new owner.

    What you’ll get:

    Canon S95 in excellent condition

Canon WP-DC38 underwater case (rated and tested to 40m)

    32GB SD card

    3 Batteries

    Charger

Moisture Munchers (for extra underwater protection)

    Original packaging

    USB cord

    Television cord

This is a great setup which takes beautiful pictures on land and sea. The S95 has a large 1/1.7 sensor, dual image stabilization, and a bright F2.0 lens. Nice depth of field for a point and shoot. There are no marks on the camera body, and the camera has worn a screen protector for all of its life. I’d like to see $400 for the entire kit.

  5. I've seen a couple threads recently with GoPros. Are any of those still available? I'm looking for a Hero2 (preferably), but would consider a Hero1 at the right price. The only accessory I'm looking for is the waterproof case. I don't need any mounts or helmet gear.

Let me know if you've got one!

  6. Can you analyze those two from a professional perspective? I feel like the purples are more vibrant from the D90, but it may also be a slightly darker exposure. Distortion around edges looks similar to my eye, and the depth of field seems equivalent. So basically, I don't see the difference.

    What do you see?

  7. Monkey - sexy photos, and I am leaning toward a D3100 myself. but I do notice a lack of detail in the highlights and dark spots. I've always been frustrated with the dynamic range of digital cameras. Are FF ones better off? Are certain models recommended over others? I feel like my old point and shoot digital limited me to taking photos on overcast days. Are SLR's better at handling highlights//shadows in general?
  8. Hey that helps a ton and does not overwhelm. This is the exact conversation I was hoping to have.

Sometimes I want reach, sometimes I want the WOW factor. I had been under the impression that aperture created the WOW factor (hence looking for a 2.8 lens), but I now see how sensor size is related too. I am familiar with photoshop and could work my way through the postprocessing work like in your .gifs (by the way, you processed some horse hairs that were meant to be in focus :p).

I think I am in agreement with you. This year, I'll buy a cropbody and a quality telephoto. Perhaps a cheap wideangle lens if available. Down the line I'll find a quality walkaround lens and maybe buy a second, fullframe camera. I could even start picking up FF lenses and get an adapter if I want to use them with my old cropbody.

I understand the aperture limitations of the telephoto I mentioned earlier. However, I was unaware that Sigma lenses were worth shooting! One thing that draws me to Nikkor is the VR system because I love holding the camera and hate carrying tripods.

This discussion helped me a ton in my decision. Thank you also for the background story of lens evolution!

Damreds, I look forward to your response too.

Now to decide whiiiich cropbody to choose. I'm thinking the top factors in my decision will be dynamic range and a good burst mode for action shots. I don't think megapixel count matters too much for my usage once you're past 10. Sound reasonable?

  9. Wow PDQGP, that is exactly the advice I was looking to hear. Thanks for such a constructive reply.

I don't know the future and what it holds any better than others. I do know that I won't spend my time thinking about it either as I can do far better focusing on today and the next 5yrs of my use. DSLR is where Id go.

I think this line is exactly what I needed.

As for my budget, I am looking around $2000 now. I plan to put over half of that into glass (probably one or two lenses), and pick up a cheap camera body. This is a setup that I plan to grow as time passes, so I anticipate upgrading the body and collecting lenses in 5ish years.

Bodies come and go lenses don't

I want to discuss this a bit more. My main concern was investing big (to me) money into SLR lenses and have them go obsolete within the next decade. Didn't film lenses "go" when DSLR's came around? I think Nikon may have even changed their lens mounting system (something about autofocus) in the last decade. Please advise. Are there adapters to compensate for the different mounting systems?

If you avoid Canon you'll be pigeon holing yourself based on the past

As for brands, I just can't go Canon. I honestly blame Canon for my loss of interest in photography. It's an immature vendetta, but I'm a Nikon guy.

If you're interested in DOF then EVIL cams aren't the way to go

Interesting about the depth of field issue with 4/3's. I honestly didn't understand why sensor size made a difference... This definitely aims me toward the SLR side.

Focus (pun intended) on glass for your particular needs. So what's your focus and intent for shooting?

For shooting, I plan to work with nature shots (both landscapes and telephoto for animals). I am already the family photographer, so people and events are important too. Sports, motion, sailing, and car racing are all possibilities as well. Who knows - if I have kids, maybe I'll be shooting portraits too? Regardless, I am looking for some serious versatility and was considering a lens like this to compliment the kit lens:

    http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-70-300mm-4-5-5-6G-Digital-Cameras/dp/B000HJPK2C/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1335197249&sr=8-3

    or maybe

    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/92012-USA/Nikon_1940_Telephoto_AF_Nikkor_180mm.html

    Thoughts?

  10. I used to love my film SLR, but I lost interest in quality photography when everyone else made the transition to digital. As a student, I just couldn't justify dropping $2000 on a decent digital SLR.

Now that SLR prices are lower and my funds are higher, I am ready to start building a serious camera collection. I want to start with a cheap camera and one or two nice lenses (thinking a stabilized "everything" lens and a high quality telephoto, maybe even f2.8)

I'm not a Canon fan after an awful experience with them in middleschool, so my natural instinct is to go Nikon. The D3100 looks solid, and the kit lenses aren't bad either!

But with an eye on the future. I am trying to build a collection that can be added/modified over the next 20 years or so. What is the future of digital photography? Will SLR's even be around with their steampunk mirrors and moving parts? Is photography headed toward a smaller form factor like the new EVIL cameras? EVIL cameras have the same image sensors as SLR's, but with a smaller housing and digital "benefits" such as live view. Do you guys think EVIL will catch on?

    This article was from 2010

http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2010/01/five-reasons-you-should-ditch-your-dslr/ and Wired Magazine was all for it.

What do you think of the Nikon foray into EVIL? Even if the current camera body sucks, do you think they will stay with the current lens mount?

Do you recommend I just get an SLR and shut up, or should I adopt the newest technology before building a camera arsenal?

  11. Read skinners thread and find out why you could be in much worse a spot with saab ownership.

Lol new saab with no warranty or parts.

Just did. The people buying new SAABs would be so screwed.

This part of the article sounded promising though since mine is a GM....

"In the event Saab cannot or will not fulfill its obligations to administer the warranty programs with its U.S. and Canadian dealers through Saab Cars North America or otherwise, GM will take necessary steps to ensure that remaining warranty obligations on Saab vehicles marketed by GM in the United States and Canada will be honored."
  12. If you made the appointment online I find it hard to be sympathetic. If you called them and made an appointment and refused to work on it when you got there, that is bullshit. Automated online appointments are fucking stupid, we take them here at Dave Gill, but they don't show up in our system. If you were too lazy to call and set up your appointment, they were too lazy to screen their online crap.

I called in and talked to them just last week to set up the appt. At the time, I didn't have the foresight to ask "what if SAAB goes bankrupt over the weekend?"

I actually assumed that SAAB had set up a fund at the time of production for warranty and recall work. Oops - didn't realize how it worked.

The recalls weren't a huge deal for me (something about the ignition switch and fuel lines), but I feel terrible for anyone who just bought a SAAB and no longer has a warranty

  13. MAG isn't going to warranty cars out of their own pocket and incur huge losses and while it would be nice to think they would, it's not likely a money maker for them. Whatever they give away at Zero Dollars would take quite bit to make up in terms of billable work from those same customers.

In the end, blame SAAB not MAG. One would think SAAB would have the plan to insure customer satisfaction and not pass their pain off to owners through the pain dealers are now facing.

To the best of my knowledge, it is up in the air as to whether dealerships will get reimbursed. Shaker SAAB is taking the risk of continuing work. MAG is not.

I wouldn't want to do work without getting paid either. I can completely understand this.

What I hate is that I was not notified when the recall situation changed. Unprofessional. What if I had driven two hours from Oxford, OH (where I go to school) for a warranty issue!?

You don't drive an $80,000 supercar. Your frustrations are laughed at.

Truth. And if I ever get the chance to buy one, it will not be from MAG.

Also, to the owner of the black Ferrari in the garage next to me. Dayummm. Your car and wife were gorgeous.

  14. Three reasons

-Could never fix my mom's old 900 while it was under warranty. She had it in 14 times because it was running rich and had check engine lights on. Eventually, I got old enough to work on it, replaced the ECU (junkyard find), and all was well.

-Back when I worked at a mechanic's shop, we always sourced our SAAB parts from ShakerSAAB in Cleveland because MAG was overpriced and couldn't get our orders right half the time.

AND TODAY and why I am

Called last week to schedule recall work. Had an appt for 11 today. Drove across town to have the recall work done. Arrived and THEY REFUSED to do the work!

Now that SAAB is out of business, I guess the status of recalls//warranties is unknown. Since MAG doesn't know if they will get their money, they refuse to do the work. I can understand this.

What I can't understand is why I never got a phonecall? I never got an email? Surely, somebody could have let me know before I drove across town!

When I called ShakerSAAB in Cleveland, they were still honoring warranties and recalls (even though it might be on company dime). This is above and beyond my expected level of service. However, MAG is far below my expectations.

Frustrated. Based on my experiences, I will certainly will not be buying cars from them in the future.

    Cliffs: MAG blows
