I did read the link, and I appreciate that you did as well. Democrats have earmarked a bit of money to pilot alternatives to the federal gas tax in certain states. My plug-in hybrid is barely an EV. I get about 44mpg overall when taking account my all electric range. Which is good, but not a whole let better than a lot of new cars that aren't hybrids. The Ohio law assesses a $200/year fee on pure EVs and plug-in hybrids, and $100/year on conventional hybrids. Which, again, I get, roads gotta get paid for and gas tax revenues are going down. But a Tahoe hybrid getting hit with a $100/year registration fee because it's a hybrid while a Honda Fit doesn't get hit with anything is sort of... well it's a strange compromise. The Tahoe is already paying a shitload in gas taxes, but because it gets 13mpg city instead of 12 (or whatever these things get, I'm not a truck person), it gets hit with a higher fee. It's all just a bit random. So do Republicans. My only point really. The Ohio law was written, voted on, and signed into law by Republicans. That's your beef with Sleepy Joe, I don't care what promises he made about $400k this or that. Also I'm a libertarian not a socialist. Don't buy a plug-in hybrid then or you'll be salty like me.

He meant partisan but maybe he glossed over Mace's post that I was replying to. Shrug.
-
How did I "make" it political. Mace said it was "tax and spend Dems" in a post that was 100% political. I pointed out that it was also Republicans, ergo less political. Guess that didn't come through, but hopefully that helps clarify.
-
But Republicans have also been pushing it, e.g. the ones in the Ohio statehouse. That's my point. Y'all can try to make this political but it's just practical. Roads gotta get paid for. Never weighed in on my opinion, all I did was state a fact -- my registration was $400 higher this year on one car because of a law passed by Republicans. I'm not sure how I could have stated that more blandly. Really the only thing I'm miffed about is that my plug-in hybrid with 18 miles of all-electric range is assessed the same fee as a Tesla. I still buy a lot of gas with that car but the law doesn't distinguish. I think a mileage-based system would be much better, although it has its drawbacks too.

Tax and spend republicans in Ohio cost me an extra $400 when I registered my plug-in hybrid this year.

If you need me to do basic, simple research for you then let me tell you who to vote for from now on. Not sure you should trust yourself with that. You can trust me cuz I'm sooooooooooooooooooo literate.
-
I implore you, please, have some intellectual curiosity. Mace, you clearly had some sort of opinion about this, but weren't willing to do even a bare amount of research on it? What value do you place on that opinion, then? Since no one else could be arsed to do 4 minutes of research, I'll fill you all in. The Minnesota Supreme Court has allowed this ballot measure to go forward in Minneapolis: So the police department would go away, to be replaced by a different department that would... have police in it. From that same page: Personally, I think this is a step in the right direction but probably only a very tiny step. About the only thing the measure will accomplish in the short term is to change the job title of the person in charge of the police.

Agreed. Local property taxes should be redistributed, or alternate means of funding services should be found. See DeRolph v Ohio.

The problem I have with "taxation is theft" is that even hardcore libertarians concede that some government is necessary (K-8 schools, national defense, etc). And if that's true, then some form of taxes need to be levied to pay for it. And once you've conceded that some taxation is necessary, then it stands to reason that if taxation is theft, then some theft is necessary. And what has that accomplished other than diluting the meaning of the word "theft." Thoughts?
-
This is not true. Not even sure where to begin here. The 16th amendment was ratified in 1913, that's when federal income taxes were authorized. But there were federal incomes taxes before that, there were non-federal income taxes before that, there were non-federal non-income taxes before that, and there were federal non-income taxes before that. We actually fought a war over taxes, sort of started in 1776. And then immediately levied taxes in order to pay for our war debts. Ergo, if taxation is theft, then you as well concede that some theft is necessary.

Link to the actual proposal (on page 88). We'll see if congress picks it up. On the one hand, I don't particularly care if your income comes from a "side hustle." I pay taxes on my full income as a W-2 employee, and I don't have much sympathy for people not declaring income on their returns in order to evade taxes. On the other hand(s), this seems like a pretty big expense for banks for a pretty minimum net haul. I wish the IRS and congress would go after all of the substantial tax cheats out there. Rich fucks and large corporations avoiding taxes through legal loopholes. The problem I have with "taxation is theft" is that even hardcore libertarians concede that some government is necessary (K-8 schools, national defense, etc). First of all, good luck finding a club or sanctioning body that will allow a rollover-prone body-on-frame SUV out for an "occasional track day." Secondly, the only thing that elevated the Syphoon above a parts-bin joke like the S10 eXtreme WAS the turbo. Without the turbo you just got a boring-ass truck. I can't believe I have to make an argument for why an Oldsmobile S10 shouldn't be on the same "fun car" list as a 350Z.
-
How the fuck did Clay's "fun car" thread get taken over with Oldsmobile Bravada talk? Y'all should be ashamed.
-
Genesis Coupe wasn't on your list, was it? It doesn't get a ton of love but that does mean prices stay low...

You're right, nobody has been talking about comorbidities and at-risk groups. I mean, other than all that information that the CDC has been pumping out about comorbidities and at-risk groups. Good catch though. Doctors should really take note and start encouraging their patients to get exercise and lower their BMIs. I can't believe they haven't thought of this yet.

I was really confused about this until I remembered notch backs were a thing. The NB Miata came out in 99. Maybe he wants to put a Flyin Miata turbo on a notchback?
-
In case you miss it at the bottom, this person actually got 5 doses of the polio vaccine over 3 years.
-
And this just popped up on reddit:
-
Most childhood vaccines are series, now. 2, even 3 shots is common. If course the J&J is one and done, barring any future determination about boosters. But then, the flu shot isn't really one and done since we get a new one every flu season.
-
I'm assuming Clay is talking about post-COVID, when prices go back to normal. Nothing good can be purchased for under $6k right now, as far as I'm concerned. The market is a complete shit-show.
-
Flu vaccine. Shingles vaccine. Pneumococcal vaccine. Not really sure what you're talking about. Fun fact! The root of the word "vaccine" is the same as "vaca," or Spanish for "cow," because the first vaccine for smallpox was based on giving people a weakened form of the cowpox virus. Vaccines can be administered via a "shot," or injection, but do you remember the god-awful nasal flu vaccine? Fuck that. Nasty stuff.

From a "driving in the twisties" perspective: NC (06-15) Miata -- These were dipping into the 6k range pre-COVID. NA/NB prices have started trending upward and I don't see them coming back down (for clean examples), and while the NC is finally starting to see some love, it's still a bit of a black sheep in the Miata world. 00-05 MR2 -- Not as plentiful as the Miata, but was a sub-$10k car pre-COVID and if you weren't picky you could get them in your price range Scion FR-S -- was easily sub-10k pre-COVID, but it's still a "newish" car and I never saw them for 6. Of that least, 2 don't have back seats and one doesn't have a sunroof or targa, and the 'verts would require a rollbar to be trackday legal. Aren't I helpful?
-
Well, my idiot anti-vax sister that I mentioned a few pages ago got her whole family infected with covid and now my idiot unvaccinated brother in law is in the ER. Anyone want to guess his BMI?

We're not allowed to like each other.

Anyway, good exchange with minimal name calling.
