Always start at the easiest point which would be the headlights. After that, I would check the fuses, then on to the relay. If all of that checks out, then you would go after the switch and testing continuity between the endpoints of the wires.

Wow. He may not be an idiot, but he is damn hard on a bike. People road race these for years at a time without rebuilds.
