Air in general is a poor conductor of heat. This is in comparison to other substances. I never claimed it was the bust insulator, but it is an insulator. That was all I was saying. I understand that air will sink heat out of your body in an air mattress, never said it wouldn't, but it's still better than being directly on the ground.

Ok, I'm done on this.  Hoping to finally get around to putting my new springs and gold valves in the bandit forks while I have 2 days off work.

    Good luck on the upgrade.

No please, give me a physics lesson.

What about my statement is ridiculous? That radiators radiate heat? I'm confused.

    Allow me to elaborate.

Air(gases) tend to absorb and radiate heat less than solids. When trapped.

And trapped really means without much room to move around.

So in this case, an air mattress has quite a bit of room for the air to move and transfer heat. Since the ability of the ground to absorb heat is large, the warmed air hits the bottom and loses some heat. Not a large amount but way more than you seem to believe. In fact it's not much less than contact with the ground over time.

Now take the air and put it in 1000s of bubbles like a foam pad, and the air in the pad really really raises the insulative properties of the pad. The transfer of the heat to and from thousands of air bubbles back and forth to the foam material itself and the air slows the heat loss greatly (much much more than pure air).

Even blankets help, but not much, because laying on it removes most of the air and allows most of the transfer to happen as if it was just one layer.

So yes, air is insulative. When trapped in small spaces.

IMHO, I'd rather ride on used tires than shinkos.

Shinko has upped the quality quite a bit in the last few years. still not the best, but decent for cheap

Looks good to me.  Sorry you got offended with the ride the other day man.   On another note,  You're going to have to lighten up, get a thicker skin, & develop your sarcastic humor skills to get the most out of this forum.     (UP- This guy's got a goat path bike & likes to ride at a touring pace, so the route is ideal for him).

Wasn't offended. I swear. I just realized someone newer to group riding might have had issues. I hope we are good to ride again sometime? (Though you are going to have to wait until I can catch up sometimes, the training wheels slow me down.)

As for the other part? I promise you if you didn't see the sarcasm, it WAS there.

I grew up in a stupidly sarcastic family. Part of my issue is trying to not destroy friendships by being a overly sarcastic ass.

<s>Once UP pointed out that he wanted trolled? I thought I delivered. Was incontinent trollop not enough? Did it need the depends joke I left out? I figured potty humor was a lower, least common denominator thing to make sure you all got it. Should I make it simpler? Perhaps limit myself to 2 syllable words or less? </s>

WTF guys, can't I have a little fun? You saved him way too soon. It's fun to watch the noobs squirm a little, especially with the stupid shit I linked him to.

Never mind me, I'll just go fuck off and die.

    Please to be fucking off.

It was not something that you agree with? Fine.

    But don't insult me.

Lol, that makes more sense now (left my brain on the pillow back home this morning...)

Good point on just making a plan though. I guess I was just putting feelers out to see if anyone was interested. And that sorta stinks for me about the active crowd here lol, I was actually thinking just a casual scenic cruise. But I'll formulate something and give it a whirl :o

Hey, I'm up near Akron, but, I love to do scenic and faster, both. Post a good enough plan to get me to ride down? I'm in.

Many of the rides I have been on, the group will wait at each stop, or turn, to wait for everyone to catch up.  If the ride doesn't have this courtesy, and you're not 100% sure you can keep the pace, don't go!

Oh, I kept up. I agree with what you said btw.

I agree with you, but everyone I've ridden with seems exponentially faster than I am on roads with curves.  I could use the practice but feel like it hinders/annoys other riders so I just don't join.  I want to ride because I love it, not spend the day with anxiety because I feel like I'm slowing everyone else down.

Text me next time you want to go. I'll tag along. I happy just to be out with people.

  9. So, yesterday I joined the ride @theroamr put together. And while I can ride at the level they were riding at, it requires lots of concentration and is slightly stressful.

This is not a complaint! I loved the ride! (also great riding with @jschaf!)

However, wasn't what I was in the mood for especially after I got some upsetting news during the ride.

I want to suggest we adopt a format for ride proposals:

All rides should say a couple things, meet time, departure time, estimated duration of ride and leaders normal riding speed (I'm using a modified @DerekClouser epic ride post)

    Speeds:

    • Release the Demons: The first rule of release the demons is, you don't talk about release the demons.

If you have to ask what the speeds are you do not belong in this group.

Honorary Member: Valentino Rossi (Though some OR demons think he is too slow.)

    • Mach Retard: 70+ MPH on the straights and 40+ over the posted limits on some curves.

The people who belong to the group know they belong to this group, they don't think they belong here. Don't jump in here unless you been riding with such fellows for some time. If you are not sure, it's not your speed.

    • Fast:Usually 70 mph on the straight and 25-30 mph over the posted limit of curve.

Be very sure you want to go these speeds and are capable of doing them.

    • Medium-Fast: 65-70 mph on the straight and 20-25 over the posted limit of curve.

This is the usual fast rides some group rides do, still rather fast. Jump in here if you been riding for a while and is comfortable at these paces on most roads

    • Medium: 65 mph on the straight and 15-20 over the posted limit of curve.

This is the everyday regular group rides pace,Jump in here if you been riding for a while and is comfortable at these paces on most roads

    • Slow: 60 mph or around posted limit on the straight and up to 10 over the posted limit of curve.

This is the a very comfortable yet fun group ride. Jump in here if you like doing friendly fun rides and also new riders must join here.
