Maui Hotel/Condo Reviews...Go

So, I'm trying to plan our Honeymoon for this Fall. The future wife and I originally wanted to goto Maui for a week. When we talked to a travel agent the cost that came out of her mouth was totally not what I wanted to hear. So we started looking elsewhere. Now we have circled back to a definitive trip to Maui.

I visited the island in May of 2009. I stayed at the Kannapali Beach Hotel. It was nice, but your average run of the mill place. Nothing special. Looking to stay someplace different without a ridiculous price tag.

I've been surfing tripadvisor.com for about three weeks, and I need some personal insight. I'm looking for other selections for Hotels/Condo's from personal experience.

Right now on the short list...

Royal Lahaina Resort

Honua Kai Resort & Spa

We also looked at the Hyatt, but it's a bit pricey for me.

I have no insight on Maui but just had to add, travel agents are one of the biggest scams out there. Me and my wife are cruisers we have been on 10 of them to date and a lot of people ask how we can afford them all the time. Because if you call a travel agent they try to tell you the will run you $3000 and up. I think the most i have ever paid for a 7 night was $1500 and that was for the 4 of us, they usually com in around $800 to $900 but ive gotten them as cheap as $450 for a 5 night. Anyway i know that has nothing to do with your trip but just a warning to some out there id stay away from travel agents they its not that hard to book your own stuff.

Can't give you much guidance about Maui, but my GF and I stayed at the New Otani Kaimana Beach hotel on Oahu when I went out to Hawaii for a select soccer tournament a couple of years ago. We got an ocean front 6th floor suite for about $1300/wk in the first part of January. It's a really sweet place that's just off Waikiki beach--very little of the commercialism and wall-to-wall traffic but within easy walking distance of anything you could possibly imagine. Nice beach right out front, surrounded by parks and close enough to Diamond Head to walk (if you're in pretty good shape, maybe an hour or so). Worth the trip fer sure!
