Flash lights, and batteries

So I picked up a streamlight pro tac hl the other weekend, great light, and very bright(600lum). But it eats batteries like real fast LOL! I have been looking at re-chargable ones and ordered a set off amazon. I have a one use set in there now till the ones come in from amazon. It uses 2 cr123 batteries.

So what are you guys using for lights and what battery set up works for longer life during use.

This streamlight can be set up to be used as a regular light with a low/high only setting. It turns on in low which is 33 lum, then goes to high which is 600 lum. It has three setting to choose from high/strobe/low, high only, and low/high only.  I wish it had a low/high/strobe setting that would be the best setup for what I am using it for.

Haven't bought a high output yet. Not sure which one to get. Sounds like 600 lumens is good enough. I have a Green Trident headlamp(C4-80lm), a Night Com white hi-low(C4-115lm max), UV(365nm) and UV(390nm) flashlight, and a mil spec Sidewinder white(C4-50lm), red, blue, infra-red. Not sure why I want to signal/mark in infra-red, but I can. The infra-red works well with night vision.

edit: The Pro Tac HL 600lumen looks good to me. I see it at 72 bucks.

My wife and I both have Streamlight Stinger DS LED as LE duty lights. She's still LE but I'm not. Anyways, they are a great light. I have the charger with piggyback back up battery mounted in my truck. Not having to buy batteries is wonderful.

I also carry a Streamlight 1AAA in my pocket all the time. It's extremely small but very handy.

I have a Streamlight 2AA light with my gun on my nightstand. I use rechargeable AA batteries in it since it didn't get used much.

And here's another light I own, Streamlight Supertac, uses CR123 batteries. It's going to get mounted on my AR.

I like flashlights, and Streamlight are some of the best.

We kinda thought this would burn through batteries quickly.

Can you get through you get through one shift with the batteries?

I was liking that smaller pencil style light at the show, not sure what make or model it was.

I haven't start using rechargeable Li-Ion (CR123 size) yet, but soon. I use a lot of rechargeable AA and AAA. They don't last forever, they burn out and won't charge. Somewhat disappointed, since they were all Duracell and Energizer stuff. The chargers are all good ones. The main charger in particular is capable of re-building a charge on a bad battery, but it didn't help for some of them.

edit: It seemed to me that the Energizers were the ones that failed most, not the Duracells. I have more Energizers than Duracells, but I don't even recall a Duracell with an early fail. The box with dead/bad batteries is all Energizers. I bought some fancy Maha Japanese rechargables, but they didn't seem to be any better than anything else. The Maha charging units, at one time were about the best available. Bought a bunch of stuff from http://www.thomasdistributing.com/ , but they don't sell cr123 gear. That was way back before amazon.com.

Rechargeable batteries require regular steady maintenance charging. Don't get anymore than what you need and will use and take care of. If you suddenly need more, buy a pack of non-rechargeables.

The kit i ordered has 4 batteries, figure two in the light two in the charger. I dont have high hopes for them i read lots of bad reviews on every brand i could find. The ones linked above seemed to get more good reviews then bad ones, and for $30 i wont be out to much if they suck.

I have the S&W MP6 flashlight 307 Lumen on hi, 34 on low.  It has the normal push button rear switch for hi/low and momentary.  Has a second switch on the side of the barrel up near the front to lock it into strobe mode.  They says it's just under 2hr's of light on high before the standard A123's are dead.  Haven't pushed the standard alkaline that hard yet.  Let us know how the rechargeable go.  I have been interested in them but was watching the same mediocre reviews.

I like the big warning on the amazon ad for those batteries that says not to use them with streamlight flashlights.

Interesting...

Q: Can I use rechargeable CR123 batteries in any of the Streamlight flashlights?
A: No. Streamlight products are optimized and the components can be damaged or destroyed by the use of anything other than the recommended battery type. The use of improper or substandard lithium batteries can be especially dangerous.

Q: Who's CR123 Lithium Batteries can I use with Streamlight flashlights?
A: Streamlight recommends the use of Streamlight Battery No. CR123A, Panasonic Battery No. CR123A or Duracell Battery No.123 with these products. Use of other batteries or mixing of used and new or different brand batteries may present a risk of leakage, fire, explosion and serious personal injury. Do not recharge, misuse, short circuit, improperly store or discard, disassemble or heat above 212°F (100°C). Keep away from children.

http://www.streamlight.com/faq/

edit: I checked, and it looks like Streamlight runs a bit over 2.00 each, Duracell about 1.80-1.90, and Panasonic is 1.40-1.50. All prices are on-line mail order, cheapest found from other than ebay source. Non-rechargable.

Btw, Li-Ion batteries work much better at low freezing temperatures. All the others crap out when cold. And for use in something like a camera, they last a lot longer.

So... If you're not in LE anymore, what are you doing now?

The stinger led is a great light they have a good focused beam. For anyone wanting to burn someones eyes out look at this light http://www.eagletac.com/html/sx25l2t/specs.html the center lux is over 61000lux with 1100+ lum. I played with it at the gun show and the beam it put out is super white and very tightly focused. It is about the same size as a streamlight stinger and very close in price.

I know it is crazy overpriced but it is the brightest hand held light out there that I found when doing research. Think the specs say 5100 lumens with 120000 candela. Yes that is 120,000 as in there is a you tube video of this light setting a pack of matches on fire with it's beam. I think I started a new sickness with this flash light thing LOL!

On a side note got a notice my batteries and charger are on there way should be here mid week. I plan to use my battery tester to make sure they are charged equal. I have heard bad things happen if they have a different charge in each battery in a light. Seen warnings and videos of fires, and exploding flashlights.
