ReconRat
Yup, but apparently sectional density is more important. But yeah, conflicting information there. edit: Or more precisely, certain expanding bullets need a certain range of velocities on target to perform. If slower, pick a bullet that will perform at the slower velocity. Like a lead slug in a shotgun. Edited April 13, 2014 by ReconRat
ReconRat
Found a modified Rossi lever gun that might make some one happy... link if pic don't show up: https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4146/5085636648_dd528dc326_b.jpg Edited April 14, 2014 by ReconRat
speedytriple
Still looks like the 50 beowulf is still a winner out to 75 yards. Plenty of energy past 75 yards just starts loose fps. http://www.docstoc.com/docs/53390987/Beowulf-24-Barrel-Ballistics

Go all out with a .458SCMAlso, I have no issue with .38s being used for deer.
speedytriple
458 socom has a necked casing and would not be allowed under the new laws.
Gump
Here is something. Chuck Hawks wisdom on deer hunting. Caliber selection.Recommends a minimum 1500fps at target for expansion and 800ftlbs at target. That would make most straight walled cartridges either not qualified or limited short range.http://www.chuckhawks.com/bad_deer_cartridges.htmhttp://www.chuckhawks.com/factory_loads_deer.htmhttp://www.chuckhawks.com/ideal_deer_cartridges.htmsince we're talking mostly handgun cartridges, better throw this one in:http://www.chuckhawks.com/revolver_killing_power.htmIn this one, he turns around and says handgun cartridges can work for a woods gun:http://www.chuckhawks.com/woods_rifles.htmInteresting. You'd think they'd multiply ft lbs x velocity=X and then yards=Y. And chart the rounds kill range from there. Leave out all the types of bullets crap.Your link to the Rossi doesn't seem to work at least on my phone. Gump
Looking at this upper. http://www.shopalexanderarms.com/Uppers-_50_Beowulf_Precision_-_Complete_Upper_Assembly.htmlCabelas has a kit like your looking at.I have a ATI AR-15 A3 T14 .410 upper. I don't hunt with it for deer. Cool gadget but simply not accurate. They should have made it modified choke but its open. The slugs come out sloppy. 40 yards is all I trust it to group good. Only Federal shells fit due to they are the only .410 2.5" shell that is made short enough and at consistent length to not get stuck in the magazine. All the other brand shells are longer. Its weird. For the money for that 50b and the price of shells for it, I'd get a old school big cal lever. Edited April 14, 2014 by Gump
speedytriple
But how sweet would it be to deer hunt with your AR? I plan to use my inline black powder this year and leave the slug gun home.

Added a link to the tacti cool lever. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4146/5085636648_dd528dc326_b.jpg I looked at revolver cartridge lever carbines, and I like the Rossi 454 Cassull. 75% more power than a 44mag. A baby 45-70. But nearly impossible to find one. edit: Changed link to another source. That first one started blocking. rsvRidr
Buffalo Bore makes some nice 44 mag ammo that helps close that gap. https://www.buffalobore.com/index.php?l=product_list&c=9 Sent from my DROID RAZR
rsvRidr
Don't rule out the 444 Marlin. It is also a very nice heavy round traveling 2000+ fps Sent from my DROID RAZR
Rich B
All this angst over allowing straight walled case cartridges to hunt deer in Ohio! I am all for it.......Finally, I can legally hunt with my 1873 Springfield....or have a good excuse to buy a lever action in 45-70. I mean really, after 25+ years of using the same Mossberg, it is time for a different deer gun, really. It still kills deer with a single shot, but it is time for something new.....There will be some dumbasses out there with less than ideal calibers, but, IMO, not that many. Hell, there will still be more dumbasses with 12 gauges than pistol cartridges in rifles......
speedytriple
I still say that Ohio is behind the times in not allowing the use of rifles for hunting. All our neighboring states allow rifles, and Indiana is much flatter then Ohio.

The proper sportsman will select the correct caliber for them.
speedytriple
I agree, if it is a clean shot it does not depend on what caliber you are shooting.
