I was under the impression that most of the new bikes speedos were driven off the tranny, thus the need to recalibrate the speedo with a gearing change. I almost got burned by that when I bought my GSXS. The non ABS bikes still had the rings for the traction control. The ABS bikes had a ABS sticker on the fender. That was the only way that you could tell without looking at the paperwork or tracing lines. The ABS bikes only came in certain colors but I didn't know that at the time. ABS bikes will have a sensor to go with the ring. I can see leaving the ring on the wheel from a manufacturing perspective, wheels are usually sourced rather than manufactured, but the sensor is another BOM item and another assembly step. Seems unlikely they'd include it in a non ABS bike.
