still2hi
i am having a problem with vacuum at low rpm and its not creating enough vacuum for my brake booster. could i possibly take my fuel pump and use it as a vacuum pump. i have an electric fuel pump so i dont need the mechinical one. has anyone ever tried this or done it? if so will it create enough vacuum? its on a 350 chevy and it has a big cam in it thats why its not creating vacuum at low rpm
desperado
I don't think that will work. But there are other ways to take care of that problem. There are vacuum resivor (sp) tanks that will keep the vacuum up to the brake booster even though the motor is not providing good vacuum at the time that you are braking. Grab a Jegs catalog, look where that cams are listed. (Page 39, bottom right in the new catalog). $35 bucks and you can save yourself alot of time. These are also real handy if you are running forced induction, they don't tend to have alot of vacuum either.

Dave1647545494
go on jcwhitney.com they make a 12volt electric vac pump for cars with big cams. it works pretty good. you can also convert a g body to hydro boost from a disel engine model or go manual brakes. still2hi
yea jegs and summit also have electric vacuum pump's but they want 250 and up. i wasnt really wanting to spend that much. i thought about converting the brake booster over to a hydralic booster before but thats something i have never done. wouldnt be sure on how to. desperado
If that isn't working I bet it's not installed right, I have run one of those on a motor that ran 5 inches of vacuum at idle (factory stock is typically 18 to 20) there is a check valve that goes inbetewwn the manifold and the tank, Make sure that it's in correctly. Guest White Horse
generally speaking fluid pumps and gas pumps don't interchange... you can use a pump as a vacuum and vice versa, but only with the medium with which it was intended to be used. Dave1647545494
if you wan the hydro boost you need to find a G-body that came with a disel. you need the power steering pump the mastercylinder all the hoses and the power brake unit.
