burgels
My wife has a 99 cougar that's an auto, and I can start it but I can't get it out of park. The steering wheel moves freely and I have held the brake down (required on this type of car normally to get it out of park) but still nothing. Any suggestions? Thanks Shane
Trouble Maker
Just because your puting the break down doesn't mean it is senesing that your puting the break down/ the signal is geting there. I'd check that first.
burgels
well all the fuses are ok, and the brake pedal sensor is moving fine, but I don't have a multimeter so I'm not sure what else to test. I get no brake lights either I noticed. I checked all the connections from the break pedal as far as I could see them and they were all fine. Not sure where to go from here. Any help would be appreciated.
Guest onikus
Double check the ABS fuse.
Tinman
Since you have no brake lights it sounds like the brake light switch also controls the shifter lock. Easy fix, test the switch, if broke, replace.

burgels
You guys are right about the switch. I checked it last night and it was toast. I should have taken it out sooner but I was convinced that it had to be a fuse and they all checked out fine.
Dave1647545494
if you don't have time to fix the switch you can get around it by shifting the car into neutral withthe ignition off and then starting the car you can then shift it into drive its just a way to bypass the shift interlock untill you can repair it hth
burgels
Not on this car. It can be shifted with the ignition off unfortunately. But, I got the truck working so we'll just use that for the time being.
