Hey, lets say I wanted to run a small public tournament in a game for money. Lets say I have 10 CS clans pay $10 to join a tournament with prizes for the winner. As long as everyone who pays the money is 18, do I need any sort of permit to do this legally? Especially if it gets bigger or what? Because I have clans intrested already and what not so let me know if anyone has any insight on this.

My understanding is that as long as you (i.e., the organizer of the event) are not making money on it, then you can do it legally.

For instance, people/establishments have poker tournaments all the time. Everyone fronts some buy-in money, with the winner and a few others taking home cash. The only problem would be if the person or establishment who hosted the tournament took a "little off the top" for themselves - that's illegal, as far as I know.

See, there's the problem - you can't keep any for "server cost." (BTW, I have no idea what game, activity, function we're talking about here, so, by "server," I don't know if you mean "like a computer" or "like a guy that walks around and fills up your drinks.") My understanding is that as soon as you "keep some" then it's illegal.

Not sure how you legalize it - I would imagine you would have to get a permit of some kind.
