Laptop battery not lasting that long.

I've got a year old Dell laptop and recently (month or two) I've been using it off the plug/out of house a LOT. I've noticed it only lasts like 1.5-2hours. Is that normal? I could've swore I bought this laptop for long battery life, like 3.5hrs - 4hrs. Are there some settings I could change or something to get more life out of the battery?

Reduce screen brightness. Also, xp has an option under power management for longer battery life. Something like "Always on", "Max battery", "Desktop", "Laptop". Also should be able to acess this by right clicking the battery icon in the system tray. Normally this scales the processor back and saves some power there.

The batteries they provide in those things degrade rapidly. To extend the battery life you have to turn down and shut down everything you can. 802.11, disable when not in use, screen brightness, volume, blue=tooth (off if not needed) all that. If the life is still a bit anemic, you need to get a new battery.
