Akula
I have never been, I have seen some really great stuff on HD about Belize. I have a friend that has family with a house there. I guess it is pretty cheap to live there.
ttemper
Ive been there. do not drink the water. the ocean is beautiful. i went snorkeling while there, great experience. got to hold a couple stingrays. I was on a cruise, so i was only there for about 8 hours. it was fun though. They were friendly to tourist too, and i'd say about 80% of the natives spoke english. IPS Mike
girlfriend went there with the military. the country has very bad poverty problems. if you stick to the tourist locations you should be fine. IPS Mike
turbomark
VERY VERY third world. The banks are all guarded by police with automatic shotguns. Its a very cool experiance, not somewhere I would want to spend more than one day in. I was in belize city, and then took a tour into the center of the country. It's somewhere that I wouldn't feel safe walking around by myself at all, and I lived on campus.
Guest powers
I would say go to Hawaii instead. I just got back late sunday and it was by far the coolest place I have ever been. Cost should total out to be the same. It is still in the states. They have very similar climates. The flight is shorter. Speak english. I was on Kauai the garden isle and it is much more laid back than maui which is the usual vacation spot. Kuaui will have that i am in the middle of nowhere feel without all the oh shit I am in the middle of nowhere panic.
