Windows Media Player wont do anything for you if you don't have a codec to decode the video.

VLC (video lan client) works great, but I'm pretty sure you still have to have the correct permissions to play DVD's. It's a copyright thing and that's why windows media player does not play DVD's unless you have a decoder installed.

 

 

A good program is Media Player Classic. It's similar to the old windows media player found in win95 & 98, but has all the new features of 5.1, DVD's and more. It is found in the XPcodec pack. http://www.xpcodecpack.com/
