Science Abuse
So Nicks birthday is next weekend, and he likes Choo Choos: http://img515.imageshack.us/img515/4352/chchue5.jpg I'm making it after the famous Southern Pacific Daylight 4449, Nick knows it as "oe'nge choo choo": http://home.earthlink.net/~starshipconductor/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/aam.jpg Not a replica, but its a toddlers toy, it need to be "frumpy'. Trouble is, I like it in wood. What would you do?

TheHaze
I'd just brush or spray some polyurethane on it and be done.
Skinner
find a color stain for it.
morabu
i say if your kid knows the train by the color, then paint it with that nice orange stripe on it! it does look good all wood though
Patrick
Daylight, Nice!!! That's one of my favorite locomotives, with the J-class Norfolk and Western Engines (I had the pleasure of seeing #611 on one of its final runs) http://home.att.net/~s.a.joyce/pics/nw611-lu.jpg Paint it like the Daylight! Streamliners are hawt, plain and simple. Check out this raging American steam fist: http://www.steamlocomotive.com/streamlined/scrapped/prr6100.jpg 140' long, duplex drive, 100+mph hauling 2,400,000 lb....scrapped in 1949. Buckeye1647545503
Leave the top and bottom alone and put the orange strip on it so it looks correct

What would you do? Who's present is it again? sounds like you already have your mind made up. YOU make like it in wood grain but YOUR not the one thats going to be playing with it everyday. I say paint it orange and black like the real thing. Cook present for your kid though, very thoughtful.
1qwk767
that looks really nice man, wish I was that skilled in wood working lol, I took woodshop my jr year of highschool made a dog house, 2 ink pens on the lathe, cd tower, dvd tower, a penny hockey board and a few bird houses and they turned out pretty good, but the train you made is flawless, I would like to see pics of what you made

Nah, Give me an Allegheny, Big Boy or Challenger any day of the week. Stream liners were cool for their uniqueness, but its like adding fender skirts to a big brawny diesel truck. Damnit I want to see the real thing, not covered up. I'd paint it though. BTW, killer wood working skills.
Science Abuse
Thanks all. You're right, plus; I'm going to the trouble of replicating it, I have to give it the signature colors. umm... the last car is not finished.Nah it's an Am Trak car. It's done now: http://img256.imageshack.us/img256/5977/img2622ox6.jpg

Mitch
How about running the orange stripe, and give the rest a clear poly coat or a stain. Shame to hide the beautiful workworking. Reminds me of the toys my grandpa made for me in his woodshop, that kind of craftsmanship is something you don't appreciate until you are a ways down the tracks of life. That being said, I hope he beats the living crap out of it from miles and miles of play. PS router some grooves in the 2x4 as tracks...pimpin. Buckeye1647545503
How about doing the black then wipeing it off with a rag after it soaks in the grain a tad then paint the orange solid. Just a idea
Science Abuse
looks good my boys would flat out destroy that in 30 seconds The wheels, maybe. They were 99 cents per 8, and they suck. All components are pinned with 1/4 dowels, everything is effectively solid poplar. I could run the engine through a wall and it would just get dusty. I once built a 30oz balsa wood bridge that was 15" long and held 350lb. Kids toys are nothin.

Science Abuse
Have you seen the Allegheny at the Henry Ford? That thing is HUGE! My dad has old photos of them being built. The boilers barely fit in their assembly room.
T Rex
Toddlers still might like to chew on things. If you do paint and/or stain make sure its something that it wont kill anybody... I guess they don't really make lead paint anymore though...
lawnman
If your kid is anything like mine, it will have to be painted.
Science Abuse
Tender car is done, except for the lettering: http://img508.imageshack.us/img508/9393/tenderwd1.jpg As for toxicity, I'm painting with impunity, because I'll be coating it with poly or acrylic. He doesn't gnaw on things anymore, and the only things he puts in is mouth seem to be rocks.
