Razorback
You might try heading to the mainboard manufacturer website to see if there is a newer driver. I've never heard of Essex before -- you're running XP SP2?

Razorback
I had trouble a long time ago with a built-in AC97 card and had to acquire new drivers as the CD drivers wouldn't work. Go to the site and look up the exact model of your mainboard and they should have all the chipset, audio, video, and network drivers (latest) available for download. Beyond that it sounds like it's a not so versatile audio card and you may need to just spend $20-30 and get an add-in PCI card like a Creative Sound Blaster. Razorback
...Or maybe spend a tad more on top of that and grab a whole new mainboard. I'm sure you can find a $40-50 name-brand board out there with onboard audio, video, networking.
HAOLE
Sounds more like a system 32 infection to me.
