Skinner
Are you trying to install windows over top of its self or installeding on a clean/new HDD?
87GT
Take your error message and paste it into Google. There used to be a certain windows update that would never install on XP. There was a workaround on microsoft's webpage if you look hard enough.

ladyhawke34
Is your copy of XP legal? Microsoft put out that Genuine Advantage stuff out a while ago and if your copy is not legit, none of the updates will install.

04silvrz
yeah, i am assuming. but i am quick to do so as i hear the 'can't update' story a lot and it's always illegal copies.

Generally, the "Windows Genuine Advantage Notification Tool" would install itself, if he was running pirate Windows. He hasn't mentioned anything about it.
