Flybye
ok so i am in the process of joining the army right now. all i have left to do is pick my MOS and go down for my physical and swear in. i wont be shipping out untill the end of the month or beginning of next due to being in a good friends wedding. i am also training so i can go in as an E2 or possibly E3 as well. anyways i am just really indecisive and would like some input on some of these jobs. i narrowed it down to about 5 that i would be interested in. mainly these five because of the benefits and they are available around my requested ship date. btw...i am doing reserves (6yrs) for right now. but may go active down the road. it just depends on if i wanna make it a full time career or not? - Utilities Equipment Repairer (52C) Whitehall 8wks AIT http://www.goarmy.com/JobDetail.do?id=135&fw=reserveNps - Carpentry and Masonry Specialist (21W) Mansfield 9wks AIT http://www.goarmy.com/JobDetail.do?id=288&fw=reserveNps - Motor Transport Operator (88M) Zistel st, Columbus 8wks AIT http://www.goarmy.com/JobDetail.do?id=162&fw=reserveNps - Construction Equipment Repairer (62B) Whitehall (i think 8wks AIT?) http://www.goarmy.com/JobDetail.do?id=77&fw=reserveNps#training - Chemical Operations Specialist (74D) Zistel st. 11wks AIT http://www.goarmy.com/JobDetail.do?id=40 so yeah...all of these can also transfer to a civilian job. that is another reason why i narrowed it down to these 5. now i just cant choose the one to go with? i really like the chemical one, but seems kind of boring and will involve a good amount of science. the driver sounds good, but all i will really get is a CDL from it. any engineering will be nice because i like to be hands on. (52C) will help me out alot in the HVAC field..which pays real well. and carpentry is also a career that pays pretty well...........SHIIIIIT this is hard. Scotty2Hotty
What do you want to do when you get out? My only regret was that I never picked an MOS I was able to utilize outside of the Army in the civilian world. If you go reserves, you maybe mobilized, but if you try to go active Army it won't happen to be honest. If you want to go active, just do it. I started National Guard and regreted it when I when active Army 5 months later. -Chemical pukes - hope you like playing in J-List gear (mask, suit etc..) You can be a construction "engineer" if you're serious about HVAC and what not. I'm a 12B or 21B Combat Engineer still and love it. Like I said it don't help me in the civilian world. I'd just try to get something out of it that you can use.
Akula
I was a Submarine Sonar Tech. Any guesses as to how many sonar jobs there are in Columbus? Do something you want to learn about, do something you will enjoy. The experience you will get, the GI Bill and all of that, are worth way more than whatever your MOS will be. Flybye
yeah im well im doing reserve because of many reasons....but MAY go active later? it will be alot easier to go active from reserves than go active from the gaurd. but yeah i think im scratching the chemical off my list though.....but the other 4 are really hard to choose from. the carpentry and HVAC one arent really available for my ship date. but my recruiter said he could try and push them back if i have real proof of the wedding coming up. the driver and engineer are available then though

Wease
What do you want to do when you get out? My only regret was that I never picked an MOS I was able to utilize outside of the Army in the civilian world. More true words about joining the service have never been spoken. Everytime someone asks what they should do when they join, I always tell them the same thing: "Pick something that has use in the outside world." I knew a guy in high school, joined the Marine Corps, which is not a problem, I respect anyone who serves. But when he got out, he went to work at Walmart. Fuck that. So when I joined the Air Force, I made sure that the career I picked had use in the civilian world. I went in as a computer programmer, got some top notch training, finished my degree, and have a good, solid professional career. Also, why the Army? I'm just curious... MrMeanGreen
I was a weapons system tech in the Navy, and it set me up for a great career path, which I'm in now. Find something technical with electronics and computers.

Find something technical with electronics and computers. yeah i was thinking about it...but alot of those seem like boring desk jobs. which i honestly dont wanna be doing when i get out. i like being at a desk to an extent...but not for the whole work day. im leaning more towards the HVAC, construction equipment repair, or a driver? the the utilities one im thinking might be the best bet? im about to leave in a bit and go make my decision
Scotty2Hotty
88M transportation may give you the CDL or Hazmat you're looking for. Don't get me wrong I had a blast being half infantry/Combat engineer. I got to blow shit up, kick in doors, serve on a Bradley Fighting vehicle crew, fire all kinds of weapons, and get stuck in the middle east for about 2 years. To be honest with you, I miss being active, but it is a sacrifice if you do choose the active route. My advice is do the active thing before the reserves thing. The reserves part will mess with time in service, grade, pay etc.. It doesn't all transfer over, trust me. There are ups and downs to both sides, but I'm happy being in the national guard for now. If I were to do it over, I would've just stayed in and gone to Italy. I deffinately wouldn't rule out the other services, but the Army by far, pays the best in bonus's and college green backs. I'll be recieving about $1,275/month (Active GI BILL) while I go to school, on top of 100% in state tuition. It's not a bad deal in the least bit, and I got $20K for coming over to the guard from the active world. If you wanna hear a my opinion we could do so over some beers. Flybye
Do what you think is best, you won't regret it. Best of luck. ok...well with my requested ship date and what not it made the MOS choosing a bit harder. there wasnt much left around the date but they are gonna push it back some for me. i ended up going with 88M (truck driver) and my unit will be off zistel in columbus. i know it is a pretty dangerous job once deployed...but im sure i can handle it. i just didnt wanna be sitting on base the whole time either
Scotty2Hotty
88M not bad. Joe aka Mojoe On here is an 88M on here if I'm not mistaken. From what I know of 88M in country, you run convoys north, south, east and west in country. You may drive a big sitting target(HETT, LMTV etc) or maybe roll in a gun truck. I won't lie when I say it sucks doing that shit. Escorting convoys with KBR turds, or just escorting AAFES trucks or retarded Iraqis. I won't lie when I say mostly dangerous because you're taking a non-combat MOS and sticking it in role in which didn't used to train to do so. Good job never the less, you'll pick up knowledge of how shitty equipment can be. Where you headed to basic/AIT?
