Red92Notch
Hey all, I have a buddy at work who has an '04 Grand AM with the "f" code 2.2L DOHC Ecotech engine with about 85k on it and it has a massive oil leak! I worked on the GM 2.2L OHV engine quite a bit, but under his hood this afternoon was the first time I have looked at the DOHC. He has a huge oil leak to the tune of about a quart a day. I took a look at the places I would suspect a leak from first, the valve covers appear to be fine. The o-ring where the distributor enters the head looks okay, and he told me the car doesn't smoke at all. All of the oil is on the driver's side pooling up on the tranny and if I remember correctly it is also on what appears to be part of the tranny mount, which is stamped with a huge "RH" on it. I am eyeing the o-ring on the oil filter lid, but after starting it up, revving it up, and then shutting it off and letting it sit, I can't see where it is leaking from. He said he had his oil changed about two months ago, but he just noticed the leak last week, so I don't think it was an installation error. I was just curious if this is a common problem with these engines, are there any other known issues, or if someone who is familiar with these engines has any suggestions? Thanks
boostedgtp
Oil pressure sender?
Dave1647545494
has the oil been changed recently? met bet is that the o-ring that seals the cap where the oil filter goes is cut or doubled up you need a 32mm socket to remove the cap and check
AJ
or an 1 1/4" socket. i've seen a few cracked caps before so check that too.
Dave1647545494
also make that a shallow socket or it won't clear the intake manifold
Red92Notch
I'll remove the filter cap at work tomorrow. It has a huge hex cap with a smaller raised hex on top of that, but I could have sworn the cap said 25mm right on it, is that possible? Where is the oil pressure sender located? Dave1647545494
that probably the torque spec 25nm its a 32mm I promise we see a ton of ecotech cars
Red92Notch
okay, I'll make sure to bring a 32mm with me. Thanks!
Red92Notch
I pulled the cap and sure enough the o-ring had slipped down partially and got cut up by the threads, must have been the ham-fisted oil change gorilla who touched it last. Went an bought a new filter with o-ring and all seems to be good. BTW I did bring my 32mm, but it is an axel socket so of course it hit the intake, but I was able to get it off with a pair of pliers. And it does say 25nm for the torque. I was hoping it was going to be simple and cheap, thanks everyone for your input!
Dave1647545494
snap on makes a shallow socket just for the eco tec you can probably find it other places but thats where I got mine glad to hear it was the easy fix
