Cordell
Haha, I've had the damn bolt snap off on me before too. Good luck getting it out, I actually cut the carrier on each side of the cross-pin to get it out. I'm not sure if I would put it back together that way in your car, but my truck has been that way for over 3 years.

Cordell
fuck that lol....ide rather spend the $25 than cut my carrier!! To each his own, if you'd have upgraded the carrier you would have nothing to worry about.
Guest tbutera2112
i was going to do a locker with 31 spline axles, but ide rather get the motor in and then just save up for a 9"....this is a cheap temporary fix, replacing the stock stuff ($170 for parts and $60 for gear oil)
rl
You could have got a used stock differential for far less than $170. I would cut it. I've had to drive them out before and it is not fun.
Dave1647545494
drill the pin out up to the lock bolt and then replace the pin or just return all those new shiny parts and get a used carrier they should be easy to find I couldn't even give mine away a couple months ago and ended up scrapping it
Guest Removed
how you going to get the carrier out without removing the pin? the pin wont let you remove the axle clips!

Guest Removed
Cut the carrier. he dont have a torch, and f all that 2, you could cut the back of the diff pin out and then drive it out even easyer!
Guest tbutera2112
could i just drill the crosspin out down to the little bolt that holds it in?
Guest Removed
could i just drill the crosspin out down to the little bolt that holds it in? thats alot of drilling dude, the pin goes most of the way across the cross pin
Guest tbutera2112
no i mean drill down into the crosspin from the top...the pin is only like 1/4 inch deep into the crosspin...drill down enough to shear the pin then punch it out
Guest Removed
maybe.... try it.

Farkas
I don't understand why you're trying to drill the pin out? IIRC, there's an 5/16 bolt that holds the pin in.. did you strip/break it?

Farkas
Doh.. Well, personally I would probably cut the C-clips out so I could remove the axles and take the diff out with the pin still in, and then you could always tap and remove the old pin-locker.. I would imagine that might make it a bit easier to deal with? I don't know how expensive those C-clips might be, but sure as hell beats cutting axles or drilling the pin itself. Guest Removed
gm's and ford's are bad about breaking off right on the last thread ! hence why they make a tool!

I never thought of trying that, I don't know about the ford rear but it might actually work on a GM. If you are replacing the spider gears you shouldn't have to worry about screwing much up. I don't know if it would work or not, but it's deffinatly an idea worth looking into.
