The Allied bombing campaign had pretty much rocked their fuel supplies, and what gasoline was coming was earmarked for the military. So it was quite common to see the few civilian cars running on wood gas or coal gas, usually with the burner/reactor mounted through the fender that didn't have the spare tire. There was a Mercedes at Pebble Beach that had the reactor and such still on it last year, kinda neat to see that kind of Mad Max engineering on a multi-hundred-thousand dollar car.
