tristanlee85
I've checked at Home Depot, Lowes, Tractor Supply Co, and Harbor Freight. None of them have anything. Any ideas where I can get one of these for a decent price? I've looked online and see them for $70 or so. Surely a plastic drum can't be that much... or I'm just a really cheap person. Dave1647545494
I can ask the penzoil man what the deposit is on the plastic drum our washer fluid comes in you can probably buy one of those or you can call them on tuesday McGlaughlin Oil Company 614-231-2518
tristanlee85
Alright. I've decided plastic or steel. Doesn't really matter. I'm looking for something that has a fully removable lid and seals with one of those locking band things. I got a message to check Craigslist and there are a couple of barrels on there, but moth of them only have the 2 threaded bungs at the top which isn't exactly what I'm looking for. I should have been more specific.
Akula
What are you going to do with it?
tristanlee85
Make a blasting cabinet out of it.
tristanlee85
I happened to drive down Groveport Rd. and glanced over at the scrap yard and saw probably 20 steel barrels... I think I found my answer. I forgot that place existed.
Akula
You probably don't want a plastic one anyway, the static will do strange things and the plastic will abraid faster than the steel.
Rob1647545496
i work at a paint factory and most of what we have will be used and dirty we only get in clean metal drums but i'll see if i can find something. you are referring to the blue ones, correct? Guest mitsumodder
there is a guy out here in the country that sells them for $7 or $8 i can't remember what the sign says. about 2 hours from c-bus.
1bad95gt
There is a guy just south of circleville on 23 that sells them for $10, next time I am through I can make sure.
tristanlee85
I checked at the Ace Iron and Metal and apparently they just buy scraps. They don't sell it even though I saw the perfect barrel about 40 ft away. So, I'll keep looking, but if you do happen to go through that area, make sure it's a steel one and not plastic. After re-thinking the plan, steel is going to cause me less problems.
BlackC50
Let me know what you need. I can get them from work. Free of charge, they sit behind our shop and nothing is done with them until they crush them and take them for scrap. Let me check on empty ones and I can most likely either get you a 55g steel or a smaller plastic, maybe like 35g.
tristanlee85
If you could get me a 55gal steel (lid or no lid) that would be awesome. I'd rather not go any smaller, and I'd rather not have plastic. I called the company formally known Columbus Steel Drum today and they can get me a steel 55gal with no lid for $30 so if it comes down to it, I'll go to them. Let me know what you figure out. Thanks!
BlackC50
Ok let me take a look tomorrow when I am in at work and see what is there.
Crossle
Call Research Alloys Inc, they are the shit. They gave me a couple of 16gallon drums for free when I needed them. Joe is the head guy over there. They may have what you need, and you may see something else you need too. 799 Goodale Blvd Columbus, OH 43212 (614) 224-4404
tristanlee85
I ended up finding one at this old flee market over the weekend. The guy had 4 of them, brand new. $10 with no lid, and $14 for a lid and strap. Thanks for the help guys.

tristanlee85
I finally put it to use this weekend. All I have left to do is create an air intake on the lid, a baffle around the vacuum port, grating in the bottom for sitting my parts on, and I think that's it. http://photos-g.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs099.snc1/4751_503382418642_320100059_55326_7542671_n.jpg http://photos-h.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs119.snc1/4751_503382423632_320100059_55327_6061453_n.jpg http://photos-a.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs099.snc1/4751_503382428622_320100059_55328_8113809_n.jpg http://photos-b.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs099.snc1/4751_503382433612_320100059_55329_5503870_n.jpg http://photos-c.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs099.snc1/4751_503382438602_320100059_55330_7938188_n.jpg http://photos-d.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs099.snc1/4751_503382453572_320100059_55331_7073261_n.jpg http://photos-e.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs119.snc1/4751_503382458562_320100059_55332_6073026_n.jpg http://photos-f.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs099.snc1/4751_503382463552_320100059_55333_2043554_n.jpg I'm going to build a stand so I can wheel it around, but so far it has came together rather well. I may end up re-doing the window later, but seeing as how this will rarely be used, that's not a priority.
1fynz
Looks good! I thought about doing this all winter but figured by the time I bought everything and put the effort in I might as well just buy the cheap cabinet from harbor freight. Respectable DIY though, I would've never thought of using a drum.
tristanlee85
Well, the one from HF weighs like 100lbs and takes up a lot more room and is like $260 (vent baffle, lighting, sand drain, etc). They have a cheaper one for $130, but it doesn't have lighting or anything else. Plus, even though I only have certain tools to do work like this, I still enjoy trying to do things myself.
