info needed: Watching HD on oldschool big screen 4:3

I just picked an older hitachi 50" (4:3) from my brother and it has component connections. I was wonder how to get HD from my cable? I already have the HD/dvr box from insight and have the cables and service. But when i try to watch the HD channels the TV's picture gets all screwed up and it looks like the cable broadcasting in 1080i when the tv is only good to 720p.

Do i need to configure the box to only output 720? If so, how do i do that?

TIA

Just because the TV has component inputs does not mean it can display an HD signal. Your 4:3 TV is getting a 1080i or 720p signal (which are both 16:9 resolutions), and is shitting on itself because it doesn't know what to do with it.
