I would think an hour and a half would be best, but perhaps starting with an hour would be better? Duke (rink manager) said that everyone must have equipment or they are not allowed to skate; i.e. helmet is mandatory. There is a contract to be signed, indemnifying OSU if you get hurt. He said everything is booked until exam week. He gave me dates that were available, I'll include these in a poll to gauge interest. The dates are:Monday March 16 @ 7:45Thursday March 19 @ 9:15Wednesday March 25 @ 5:30If these don't work, I can call the chiller or even see if the Newark campus rink has times. I have extra skates, they are old, but I understand not wanting to wear used gear. I have extra shin pads if anyone needs to borrow those. Any of those would work as of nowReally, you just need helmet, shin-guards, elbow pads, and a stick. I would say that pants are not necessary, but nice to have. You can get a girdle that would go under sweat pants; cheaper than pants. Shoulder pads are not necessary if there is no hard checking. If you plan to use them often, you may want to get a more expensive pair as they are typically better in lots of ways, but for a skater who is just starting out, I would recommend a less expensive skate. I typically get a size and a half smaller then my shoe size; typical sizing for hockey skates; unless you are looking at mission or tour brands. Harb67 Posted February 18, 2009 Report Share Posted February 18, 2009 You can rent skates for about 2 bucks at the OSU ice rink.I've got a spare stick someone can use (2 if my buddy doesn't come along), as well as some practice jerseys and socks, but no spare pads Pads are for pussies anyway; all I've worn during Winter intramurals is helmet/gloves/shin pads cuz it's mandatory (and a cup because I like my nuts). Sure, I've so far bruised my tailbone and put a real nice bruise on my right hip, but what's hockey without a little pain? *edit*Also, if you're going to buy gear, check local Play It Again Sports. I only know of one in the area (then again, I havn't looked too hard) and the selection wasn't the greatest, but what they do have is pretty cheap. I wouldn't buy any equipment new just to play some pick-up hockey. The new stuff is far too expensive for that. The Hockey Stop on Bethel does the best job at sharpening too. I would imagine that eliminates that option. I am okay with any of the dates, but we would want probably 12+ people. If we don't have goalies, we can flip the nets and play bank shots.
