2005 Pacifica error code 404

SYMPTOM

P0404 - EGR POSITION SENSOR PERFORMANCE

 

WHEN MONITORED:

 

SET CONDITION

The EGR flow or valve movement is not what is expected.

 

POSSIBLE CAUSES

 

  • Good trip equal to zero
  • High resistance in 5 volt supply
  • EGR sensor signal circuit open
  • EGR assembly
  • EGR solenoid control CKT
  • Intermittent condition
  • EGR sensor signal circuit open
  • EGR sensor signal circuit shorted to ground
  • Sensor ground circuit open
  • EGR assembly (ground)
  • PCM

so should I try replacing the EGR valve first? it's right up front and should be a pretty easy swap out.

 

Your chances that just replacing it are good that it'll fix the problem, but you could be saving yourself a few bucks to work through Gearhead's flow chart.

yet still dont know which motor this is on...3.5 or 3.8?

 

and since either have the egr valve position sensor on the egr valve, it might be a safe bet to say that the egr valve could fix it. but the codes would still need to be erased and the pcm relearned.(with a proper scan tool, not just a code reader/clearer)

Doesn't pulling the battery connection to the car and stepping on the brake for a few seconds take care of that too?

some times it can, some times not. all depends on the car.
