Offered a job, Should i take it?

Today as i was checking the Craigslist jobs section as i do 10 times a day, i ran across this ad: Tech Support Specialist needed (greater Columbus Area). http://columbus.craigslist.org/tch/1702681562.html i figured i had nothing to lose, so i sent a copy of my resume over. 15 minutes later my phone rings. it was a recruiter from this company called AnuResources.

The recruiter gave me the rundown, explained to me id be on call, waiting for support tickets to come in for faulty computer hardware at chase branches. she explained to me that every ticket i respond to, is automatically 1.5 hours of labor at $17 an hour. i asked how many tickets per day i would generally see, and she said around 3. which is fine with me, thats nearly 75$ for just a few hours work. id be on a weekly payroll, and i would have to call all the work i do back to the office. seems easy enough.

Im stuck in a situation. my first concern is who the heck is this company? has anyone heard of them before? Has anyone done this kind of work before? whats it like? seems pretty damn easy. It really seems up my ally, and i fucking hate my current job. i dont think this would provide me with enough income to quit my current job completely. i could still work a few evenings if needed. This is the first job offer ive had in the IT field, so i have no prior experience. i feel this could be a good foot in the door type job, and would look good on my resume for future jobs.

what would you do?

never heard of it, but my uncle and a good friend of mine are in tech support, and they fucking HATE their job, my uncle actually is on anxiety medicine and my buddy just got diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, if it were me, i would only take the job if they offered me full benifits and they had DAMN good health care

I have heard of them. I suspect that another company may have the contract and Anu is the subcontractor.

There are a lot of Chase locations around. Do you get mileage reimbursement? If you think the pay is too good to be true then it is. Let's say you have a ticket for a bad hard drive. They ship the drive to the office and you drive half an hour to the site. Once you get in and talk to the right people, call support to check in that you are onsite, the office staff find the HDD package, point you to the PC, you unbox the drive, install the drive, box up the old drive, call the support center to check out (do they need to you boot to the network to start the image??? do you have to stay to make sure it finishes the image??? what happens if there are problems with the new drive/image...etc.) ....anyway, another 30 mins have gone by, then you travel back to wheverever and that eats up the last of your standard 1.5 hours. I am not saying don't do it. I am saying ask some more questions so you can make a more informed decision.

Good luck either way.

It had even more run on sentences before the edit.

i appreciate the info you have provided. i will take some of these questions into consideration, such as the paid mileage. i had asked about restoring the data and the lady said no.

$17/hr for just 40 hours a week is barely enough to live on, I couldn't imagine being on call for that much.. unless you live with the folks and don't have any bills or anything.

i do indeed live the with the folks for now. im certainly not venturing out at 8.50 an hour like im at now. id really like to get my foot in the door somewhere, but it seems there wont be many hours, 20 at the very most.

I got my start in the IT world by joining the Air Force. Six years later I get offers typically around $55 an hour (stateside), full benefits, stock options, full-time. Just saying if your looking to start your future, dont waste too much time. Four years your up and running.

I joined at 18 now Im 25 making pretty good money, been around the world, and have alot of room to grow. Downfall is I work alot, never see my kid, and have only seen Ohio once in 7 years.

I know a couple guys at Chase, I'll check with them. But the whole thing sounds a little fishy to me. $25 for a service call? You could spend 30 minutes each way, so that's 2.5 hours if everything goes well. That's $10 per hour. My big question is what happens when it takes 3 or 4 hours to solve a problem. Heck, a simple defrag will take up most of that 1.5 hours you're getting paid for.

But, you gotta start somewhere. If IT is where you want to go, why not consider Teleperformance (used to be calltech). I send my students there all the time. I've heard it's a sucky place to work, but it's easy to get hired and start racking up experience in the IT field. Move on once you have enough experience to find a job you actually want.
