Don't waste your money period. Just speed wisely, keep your eyes open a d watch traffic ahead of you. I've not used my V1 for nearly 3 years. Zero issues. Been hooked on trapster lately. In VA and DC this week and it's amazing how many folks use it here. Detectors aren't allowed but honestly aren't needed. Every time I drive past those ones set up on the side of the road it doesn't hit me til I'm about 50-70 feet in front of it if it gets me at all. I wouldn't go as far as claiming they keep people from getting tickets.. but they can sure make a difference. I can remember at least 3 different situations where it saved me from tickets. Guest tbutera2112 Posted May 26, 2010 Report Share Posted May 26, 2010 radar detectors are piles of shit...i went out and bought the top of the line escort last year, spent like 400 or 500 or something... all it did was beep like a motherfucker randomly for k-band when there was no cops around, and every time i passed a store it would go off...what a pile then im flying down the freeway and theres a cop sitting in the median and my detector didnt pick up anything the cops here use laser...so unless theyre firing it, youre not getting beeped at...and i doubt they sit there all day firing it at random ass cars...theyre just waiting for you suckers to pop over the hill doing 100+ thinking youre invincible with radar detectors i pity the fools. i returned it to best buy and bought car parts. 944s2 Posted May 26, 2010 Report Share Posted May 26, 2010 If used properly a good (read Escort or V1) radar detector can be a very handy tool. I have used mine to get out of many tickets. Yes its true that some cops use laser but a lot use the instant on KA band. As long as you are aware of your surroundings you can easily tell if its a cop or false alarm. Hell I even use mine in the DD just to reminded me to look down at my speed if it goes off. The escort 8500 I have has also saved me at over a mile range. The people that say it just beeps and never detects cops don't know how to properly understand the different frequences. X K and KA... However I see no reason no too join up. You will also get pushed notices when a cop is sighted clocking traffic. Keys to real sucess that I have found make it priceless are: 1. Register and note/vote for traps in your commonly driven routes/area. 2. Set push location notifications for the same. I get alerted during my dive times along my route to and from work (I-270. And around my home. Works great 3. Buddy up with people you know and who are in the areas you are. Trapster shows when a fellow member has deign you route with so many minutes but beter yet, I hqv two buddies that drive pretty much the same exact route as me daily, so I know for sure there's a spottr ahead of me and that he is actively using the app. Really cool. Way better than any detector. So far I'm still newer with this app but it's paying off and I use it every time I'm in the car. Funny thing is I Saw and noted the user name of a Dublin cop. I have the same one that I paid around 300 for brand new, and it has paid for itself. You have to think of it as a secondary device, not something that will automatically save you. It looks super gay with red marker on the top and it does go off sometimes for no reason, it does pick up radars though and I can prove it. I've not used my V1 for years with zero issues or close calls. I'm not a freak on the road. Usually 72-75mph cruising but I've been known to push it a bit now and then Tonight is a great example of not needing it. Cops everywhere. Trapster has been going off with push notifications all night. If you know the program....just watch for the blue lines using the patrol feature. But instead they had an older 3 something BMW sitting looking like a broken-down and then were crouched behind it with 2 bikes lasering people. Luckily my 3.0L Montero couldn't speed pulling a 4200 boat behind it if it's life depended on it.... Regarding the Radar.... what I always told radar detector newbies applies here. It is never a guarantee, only a tool. However the tool allows me to be more informed. I will never have less info without it, and many times I will have much much more info than without it. To each his own, but I'd never not have mine with me where practical. That being said, I tried every motorcycle solution under the sun with my previous bike and none were practical, so I have to ride naked! iwashmycar Posted May 30, 2010 Report Share Posted May 30, 2010 ive got an older cobra that i pretty much ganked from my brother... its only "worked" to inform me to slow down in time maybe 3 times.. other than that its great for finding gas stations and grocery stores. highway mode FTW granted i guess it helps on the freeway alot too... do the officers in the median of the hwy ever have radar on!? if so i guess mine doesnt really do shit lol.
