My new neighbor moved in. Really nice guy. He was telling how he was going to hold off on cable for a while to get his finances in order....first time buyer. He then asked if he could pay me like $15 a month to use my Webz.

Tell me the dangers of this? Does that mean if I have a directory shared on one of PCs, he'd have access to it? He could potentially sniff my packets and capture data I move? Or do I just say sorry can't help ya.

he would have full access to your network. u could turn on the windows firewall, and turn off sharing. but, he could still sniff packets on your internet usage. i would say no unless i REALLLY knew the person well!

If you have a dual radio router like an Apple Time Capsule, you run 2 wireless networks. I run my network and a "guest" network. I let people who come in to my house connect to my Guest network, it keeps them separate from you. I bet Netgear or Linksys has a N router that does that too.

it would still give him access to his network, therefor allowing him access to the router. meaning he could gain access to everything through that router with a bit of hacking. sure he couldn't just sniff on the current subnet, but with a little work could gain access.

 

i just wouldn't grant someone access to my network at all. I don't broadcast my SSID at home, and I run WPA.

Have him buy you a second router, basic ones are short money. Then hook up things like this:

Your router

 

You will be behind your router's NAT and Firewall, giving you the same protection you currently have, and all of his packets will be entirely outside your network. Even if he gets the most basic WalMart POS router, you'll be hard wired so it won't effect your connection speed. 0 cost to you, with 100% control in your hands.

 

Although if he starts downloading 300 torrents of Midget Luchador porn your speed will go to hell. But that would be true for any solution.

with custom router firmware like DD-WRT you could set up multiple wireless keys so even if he had access he couldn't readily decrypt all of your information. Also if you had his router going to yours via ethernet and his assigning addresses on a different subnet then you would \be fine.

I know an apartment building where all the tenants are splitting a roadrunner business class connection and only paying $10 a month or so each. Genius.

Get a sonicwall. Setup Guest Wireless on a separate subnet put deny rules between the 2 zones... profit.

yep, that would work.

 

another thing I would be concerned with is what he is downloading. cause they are cracking down with torrent trackers and shit. everything would come back to you if he was downloading movies all day.

 

for me, i wouldn't share with ANYONE outside of a couple close friends.

The security person inside me says absolutely no. However, I would probably say lets do $30 a month, turn off network sharing, and just rely on your SSL and TLS connections to sheild you when doing banking, etc. If you do any work from home, you can also rely on your VPN for encryption/encapsulation.

I wouldn't do it but it is possible to setup 2 networks. Without buying extra equipment I wouldn't feel safe sharing.

 

You could set him up on a DMZ with a different subnet mask as yours, lock down your internal network with a hardware firewall and not use wireless at all, and put a hardware firewall between his DMZ and the internet. This way it will be harder for him to reach your internal network (not impossible) and if someone was attacking your connection it would go to his box first. Just another layer of security.
