Hiding a ValentineOne

Just picked up another speeding ticket. It's time to get a radar detector. However, I'm all about having a clean dash/windshield and I really don't want to have that V1 cord dangling down into my cigarette lighter all day.

I have seen that Valentine One offers an external display; however, it appears that the physical detector still needs to be affixed to the windshield. Has anybody attempted to disassemble their V1 and run an extension wire from the main unit to the radar sensor?

Ideally, the main unit (circuits and crap) would be hidden within the dash. I would plant the frontfacing sensors in one of my sunvisors, and the rear facing sensor somewhere in the rear window. I've seen installs where the display screen is one of the external ones and planted within the rear view mirror with 2way glass. Awesome. Totally stock looking when off.

Have any of you tried this//taken apart a radar detector? Do I need to worry about any advanced physics crap like wavelengths and sensor distances and whatever else?

What most people do is mount the V1 high on the windshield above the rearview mirror and tap into the power source that lives up there for the sunroof/lights/ect.

It's very clean, and neat.

I don't suggest mounting so high but it could work. I suggest mounting it directly in the middle of your windshield. Depending on your car you could run the power wire under your dash and hard wire it.

Yeah drop a couple hundred on a detector, that way you know when you're gonna get a ticket the same time the cop does instead of 20 seconds later.

What you're saying is true for laser, but a lot of OHP still use regular old radar. They use it enough that my detector paid for itself a couple years after I bought it.

Don't buy one thinking you will never get another ticket, because you will. Buy one with the understanding that over time, you will probably save yourself from enough tickets to warrant the purchase of it in the first place.

Yeah you cant defeat laser unless you buy a jammer. Those are illegal in ohio. But radar is easy to defeat since the radio signal is spread out. Many of times I have been saved going up a hill or around a corner because of the early warning.

Jammers are illegal but "shifters" aren't.I have a Passport SRX so far so good.I have had it about a year and hasn't missed one yet!Knock on wood.

See think like a cop, if your going around a bend where a cop could be sitting... slow down to about 72mph... no cop.. keep accelerating. I have got less tickets with no detector than with... so Do what you want it is all preference... Rob Has his mounted up High and Tapped into the OnStar power on his Vette. Looks real good hardly noticeable

I learned my lesson back in the 80's with the origanal Escort not to rely on detectors 100%.My car had the SRX in it when I bought it.I actually sold it brand new to the guy I bought the car from.I would never pay $1000.00 plus for a radar detector.

+ 1 to hard mounting it near the mirror. I have not had a detector since I was 21 (9 years) and I have not had a ticket in 7 years. I don't go over 72 on the highway, I NEVER speed in town (25-35mph zones). You could hit a kid running out from a car, dog, or miss that hot girl running by. I want to go faster, just not worth the money.

AMEN! This is what I have been preaching for years...this did better than me having a radar detector.

This is how I do it too. If there is any place for a cop to hide, I slow down. It also helps to memorize where the cops hang out on your drives to work/school/whatever, and slow down for those areas.

To the speed limit comments, I definitely understand. I am a calm driver on freeways (cruise at 70 and generally careful within cities). However, I do alot of driving through the countryside and have been caught twice entering small municipalities where the speedlimit drops from 55 to 35 and I'm still at 60. Both times have been radar.

Thanks for the mounting location suggestions. Ideally, there would be no valentine box on my windshield; however, I have yet to see an example where the detector was taken apart. About to check out Ohio Subarus...

Why are you needing the V1 taken apart? I have a hard wire set up in the RX7 and just ran straight phone line connector to the power and then ran it to mount over the the rear viewjust cut the phone connecter off the end you are connecting to power and plug the other end into the V1.

Am I missing something here?

The one I have has worked pretty well above my rearview. Ive got the window bracket shoved up over the headliner and a piece of velcro to keep it sturdily attached to the headliner.

Barely noticeable, even though my car has no tint-strip, stock or otherwise.

You can see it up and to the left of the mirror:

Both of my maximas are wired this way for my V1. I just move it as needed....

no wires dangling.... nothing taken apart...

I've got my V1 in my Z06 mounted to the visor mount on the driver side next to the rear view. I ran the wire from there around the moulding down to the fuse block. You have to bend waaaay over to see it from outside the car. No way you'd notice it through a window unless you knew exactly where it is. The lights are the issue from the back. That is why they sell the remote...so you can place the indicator lights out of the view down low. I'd like to wire-in a power kill for it so that I can kill it without reaching up there if I do get pulled over.
