zeitgeist57
I figure I'm on CR enough, might as well drop the question. Though, this IS mostly a bunch on non-hygenic car guys... I have a newer shower stall in my master bath, plastic sides and silicone caulk sealing everything together. I usually take a scrubbing sponge and some Soft Scrub with Clorox to clean it out. The drain pan is especially grimy when I was working on my Vette and cars out in the garage with flip-flops on...the bottoms of my feet got really grimy. Anyway...aside from Soft Scrub I'll spritz all the areas prone to mold with Clorox Clean-up. Usually does the trick. Recently, the edges have started building up a LOT of mold...and it doesn't come out well with the scrubber and bleach products. I spritzed and plan on leaving it until tomorrow night to see how things go. Any other ideas on how to eradicate persistent mold blooms without stripping and recaulking? Buckeye1647545503
Zep makes a pretty kick ass tub cleaner
evan9381
mr clean magic eraser took the majority of grime out of the tub when i bought my house last year. greased lightning also works well and something i noticed at my apartment, which had horrible drainage...drain cleaner will eat through a lot. id pour it in and where it pooled up by the drain before going down, when i'd go back in an hour later or so, it was a clean spot where that had been. maybe get some draino or the gel type and spray it on, maybe scrub it in, and let it sit, then rinse it w/ HOT water. worth a shot i guess. TimTaylor751647545500
I found this when I tore out my bathroom; if the mold/mildew keeps appearing regardless of how well you're cleaning it, more than likely, it has spread throughout a good portion of the walls behind the surround. I caulked and re-caulked and it kept coming back. You're really not going to know the extent of the spreading until the surround is pulled. That stuff is no joke and too dangerous to your health to not fully investigate.
zeitgeist57
Tim, I hear ya, but my last house had it worse than this when I pulled the old surround out to lay down tile and the greenboard wasn't even soaked. I am very confident that I just need to get a better handle on cleaning...
Rally Pat
Look for this stuff called Mold Armor. Its great stuff. Comes in a green bottle.
Slowbalt
Lots of good suggestions for cleaning already. It isn't hard to remove old caulk and redo it if the mildew is just on the "surface layer" and the cleaners fail. Probably will look better freshly done anyway. Good luck!
