On XP it'll top out at 3Gig regardless because of addressing limit in the OS. For practical purposes (the sizes of mem dimms you'll buy, pairing, etc) 2G is what you should aim for.

You'll see a MARKED increase in performance coming from 500M

What language is this in?

I have never done a backup myself and not exactly sure how its done and which files need backed up.

Just like backup everything you would want to keep from your comp; music files, pr0n,pictures etc. (don't forget your bookmarks too). - I usually just copy the "My Documents" folder onto a thumb-drive.

I do have my original restore disk.

Do you still have the original install disk for XP w/the serial?

Whats a good amount of ram to have, what will enlarging it increase/do

Most computers nowadays have at least 1gb (1024mb) of ram - My old desktop has 2gb, Laptop has 4. I'd say at the very least you want to run 1gb (if possible).

Enlarging the memory (RAM) will make webpages load much faster and you'll get overall better performance from your puter.

how do I know if I can upgrade?

Download/install/run SIW: http://www.gtopala.com/ (free). It will analyze your system and tell you how many memory slots you have open as well as the Max. amount of memory you can run in each slot.

So are my documents and my pics the only tings i need to transfer over to a thumbdrive? I dont have any music other than itunes and I assume that will all come back after I reload it. After I transfer these, I then restore off my disk(I dont know if theres a serial number). I asume xp is on the restore disk that came with it, if not I can get a copy from my neighbor. If I lose any pics or documents my wife will kill me.

Yea - you don't need to transfer any "system" files, just personal files that are important to you. Not sure about Itunes.

Restoring and Re-installing windows are two different things. Restoring reconfigures windows to a previous setting which in and of itself can be problematic. Reinstalling (& Reformatting) "permanently" deletes the entire contents of your current windows install and replaces it with a fresh copy - This should be done about every year for EVERY version of windows.

To be safe I always double-backup all my files when reinstalling windows (I.E. back them up on two separate thumb drives).

Make sure the XP disk is an installation disk (it should be) and make sure you have the correct serial number (probably located somewhere on your comp. case) - you will need it.

Just a fair warning.. Itunes is a suck, and i wont promise your library wont be screwed up when you re-install.. I have no good info on how to prevetn it either.

maximum summary

maximum capacity 3072 mbytes

maximum memeory module size 1024 mbytes

memory slots 2

yea you can support up to 3gb of RAM. WOW - you should notice a HUGE difference going from 504 to 3gb lol. If your going to upgrade make sure you get the right RAM - go to the "memory" tab below the motherboard settings and see if your running ddr or ddr2.
