Zeppelin
Car has sat most of the winter. Started it up a couple times. Took it out a couple weeks ago for about an hour. On the way home this started. Checked, and it was about a quart low on oil. Filled her up and it got a bit better, but is still there. Sounds like it is in the driver side valvetrain to me. Gets worse as you idle up the motor. Anyone have an idea before I start in on getting the valve cover off? Here's a sound bite. http://www.zeppelinsreef.com/images/war_eagle/valvetrain-noise.3g2 Thanks
Not Brian
Sure it's not the belt? Mine makes the same exact noise when it's cold out (less than ~50 degrees)
Zeppelin
Ya, I pulled the belt and started it up this morning to be sure. Thats what I thought it might be too. That, or the tensioner pulley. Put my ear up to the valve cover and it sounds like its coming from inside for sure.
AJ
did you pull both belts or just one?
Cordell
Hard to tell over the internet of course, but could be a lifter tick. It kind of has a metalic ting to it over my computer, kind of hard to tell. Like AJ said pull both belts and check to be sure.
Zeppelin
Just pulled the one. Putting an ear to the valve cover it really sounds like its under the driver side front somewhere. Doesn't sound passenger side low where the second belt is.
flat tire
My vote is lifter.
Richard Cranium
Would it be worth heading over to harbor freight and grabbing a stethoscope? You can borrow mine if you want to come get it.
Patterson
I couldn't hear any sound. Does it idle smoothly?
Zeppelin
Ya, it idles smoothly. Lifter or rocker is kind of where I'm headed thinking. Wondering if something got into the lifter or since it hadn't been run for a couple months and was a little low on oil, a lifter isn't pumped up right or something. Patterson
Okay, used a different player. I'd vote for lifter.
Cordell
Lifters are fairly common, the rockers have had issues with the needle bearings falling out so that should be obvious if you pull a valve cover. I'm still leaning towards a lifter.

Cordell
These are stud mount right? Possibly the rocker nut backed off? Nope LS motors are bolted on, you're thinking of the older small blocks.

evil8
I will call number 5 rod bearing.
Zeppelin
LOL. Not unless they moved the rods right under the valve cover on some LS1s.
evil8
Early rod bearing failure, before it knocks, squeaks and sounds like its right under the valve cover. I hope for your sake that I am incorrect.
