Sam1647545489
I am reading that to just torque them to 0 lash. Is there a sequence that I need to follow to? Anyone else got any other info on the rocker arms for 96 vortec heads? :dumb:
AJ
hyd. or solid cam? stock cam when i do it i set to zero lash with the engine off then start it. with it running back it off till it makes noise, then tighten the rocker untill there is no more noise then add 1/2 to 3/4 turn and move on to the next one. AJ
also you might have to go through all of them and tighten them up just a touch to quite them down so you can hear the ones your adjusting.
Sam1647545489
Thanks Aj, Right now the motor is on a engine stand so I will tighten them to 0 lash. Once i get it in the boat and running then I will go back and try what you posted.

Sam1647545489
Do I need to do any sequence in doing this. I set the motor at TDC and then locked them down to 0 lash.
AJ
no. just as long as you do all of them. i start front to back on one bank then switch to the other bank and start front to back again.
Patterson
Remember when you do it to "roll" (are we allowed to say that?) the motor over so that both valves are closed when doing each lobe. While you tighten them down, spin the pushrod with your finger, when you start to feel a bit of resistance take it a 1/4-1/2 turn more and stop. That should be enough to get the motor running. Once it's running adjust them till they stop ticking and you'll be good to go.

How messy does it get with the covers off? Best I've found is an old steel cover with 1" holes cut out above every rocker nut. May still have one I made laying around. If not, you just need a $.50 cover and a hole saw.
Guest Hal
Vince's way would be nice, but it won't get very messy without a cover
