Turbo Clocking Question

I just had my SAAB’s turbo rebuilt by a specialist in Connecticut (turbo is the stock Garret GT17). When he mailed it back to me, he left the exhaust housing and pressure housing bolts a bit loose so that I could “reclock” it myself to achieve the proper alignment. Well, after a testfit and tightening down the bolts, I discovered that the correct position requires the CHRA to be rotated another 10 degrees or so (one of my coolant lines won’t quite clear a flange). I can move the pressure housing fine, but my exhaust housing is too tight to rotate on the CHRA.

 

How do I back the exhaust housing off so that I can rotate the two parts? I certainly don’t want to take a mallet to my freshly balanced and resealed turbo!

 

This would have been so much easier if one of us had made alignment marks on the original housings. Ughhh :yuno:

Exhaust housings fit a lot tighter than compressor housings. A block of wood and a hammer will do the trick, just try to walk it off evenly by tapping around the housing 360degrees. It will come off. when tightening back up, same thing, tighten little by little because if the housing goes on or comes off at too sharp of an angle,it can bend one of the turbine fins. Or what dude said above me:)
