Nice. I've almost bought a PSL a dozen times over the last 15 years and I'm not real sure why I haven't pulled the trigger yet... Great guns and cheap to shoot.

What's the difference in a 7.62x54 and the 7.62x54R?

There isn't one. You might be confusing it with 7.62x51. The R stands for Rimmed however.

Great rifles.

You are going to need to get the rubber eyepiece if yours didn't come with it. It positions your eye for the proper eye relief and will protect you from "scope eye." ;)

The amber lens caps are nice, too, and originally came with that Romanian TIP-2 scope...

A nice PSL action shot....

Perfect! Been trying to find the eye pieces as mine did not come with any. And I totally need to find that Russian sniper suit that guy is wearing :)

Lol. Pretty sporty isn't it. It's not Russian, though, it's Romanian.

The Russian's don't use the PSL rifle, they use the SVD Dragunov which is quite different even though it looks similar and uses the same cartridge.

I can't afford a real Russian Dragunov but I have the next best thing - an exact copy made by Norinco (North China Industries)!

The NDM-86, also known as the Type 79 Sniper rifle in the Chinese military...

Here's my PSL54C for comparison...this one has a slightly larger Russian 8x42 PSOP optic, though.

lol... It's a fairly powerful rifle. You need a good backstop and a lot of distance anyway. The ballistics are very close to the 7.62x51 (.308) round.

I really like the fact that you can still use your iron sights with the scope in place. Nice feature.

What type of ammo are you going to use?

If you can find some of the Czech ammo from the mid-sixties (silver tip) or even the later copper washed cases from the late 80's, buy it. It comes in the greenish cardboard boxes. It's very consistent and is the second best type of surplus that I've ever shot out of my PSL.

Pretty sure this is what I have:

I have only about 20 rounds left of it. Trading some .308 to my boss and getting some from him. Going to order those other pieces tonight.

Be careful when you install the lens, the glass cracks VERY easily. The thin metal portion that slides over the scope was slightly bent on my first one and when I tried to bend it back to fit around the scope the lens cracked.

Most of the Russian and Romanian military stuff is practically bomb proof - not this lens... lol.

Here's what the Czech ammo looks like....

This site has plenty of data on the various types of 7.62x54R surplus - identification, performance, ballistic coefficients, etc.

Ok, finally got to shoot it. Worked like a charm. the range I went to would not let me shoot the steel cored stuff, which is funny as they have before. Just need to sneak some in next time I guess. Was having a little trouble finding the right eye releif, but I have not got the eye peice yet. Very happy with the trade so far. :)
