koolrayz
Thinking about a different weekend out of town. I did some searching on here and did not see anything about this area. I was thinking about the wheeling area but wondered if anybody had some first hand experience with any of the places in that area. Thanks! -Alex-
I've gone to the dog track in Cross Lanes a few times. The food inside the restaurant is really good. The food in the area overlooking the track is cheaper, still pretty good, but the service usually sucks in that part. I'm not a big gambler, but I have a good time every time I go. I live close enough that I just drive there and come home at the end of the night, but I've heard the hotel is pretty nice.
SpaceGhost
If you are in a casino, and not in Vegas, you might be a redneck.
Dr. Pomade
Ray I've been to Wheeling Downs (or whatever the name is of the casino there) a few times, though I haven't been in about five years or so. Casino itself is decent and IIRC there are plenty of eateries inside the casino. I haven't stayed there overnight so I can't speak to their rooms, etc. Something that comes to mind is that the area immediately surrounding the casino is not the best. In fact, it's a preferred spot for robbers: they see tourists driving around the area with out of state plates and car jack them at intersections. I don't want to come across as alarmist or anything - I'm sure we can find rougher neighborhoods in several areas here - but just something that came to mind. gillbot
wheeling is a shithole, i grew up just north of there up at mountaineer it's a little better but somewhat rural
TurboNova
area is not nice. The wife and I stayed a little piece away from there last time we made the trip and stayed overnight.
Rustlestiltskin
wheeling is a shithole, i grew up just north of there up at mountaineer it's a little better but somewhat rural Calling Wheeling a shithole then suggesting Mountaineer. LOL And for everybody who is putting in comments about the area. I LIVE 5 minutes away from wheeling downs up in the country in OHIO. Wheeling downs is located on wheeling island which is an island in the ohio river between wheeling,wv and Ohio. Although wheeling island is a low income shithole for the most part since anybody with money either lives on the ohio side or across the river in wheeling. There is nothing to worry about when going to Wheeling downs. I could park my car on the island and walk to the casino with $100 bills falling out of my pocket and shitting out gold chains and nothing would happen. This isn't columbus where you are going to get shot. There is nothing to worry about when going to wheeling island downs n casino. Yes, it isn't Vegas. Yes, its in west virginia. But if you wanna go somewhere close and want to play table games, slots, dog racing then its a cool place to go. This is all comming from a guy who doesn't even gamble. I hope this clears up EVERYTHING in this thread. Don't be scared in the slightest to go to wheeling downs. Drive down. Stay the night in the hotel and get your gamble on. -You wont get robbed -You wont get shot -Your car wont get stolen -You wont get your angus peppered
Trouble Maker
up at mountaineer it's a little better but somewhat rural Ya, it felt like it took a while to get there too, once you turn off of 70 and start going north it's a little slower going. It was a fun time and a nice place. I thought the horse racing was a nice addition to the regular casino. You can go back there and eat dinner on the track to waste some time. Though, I'm not sure I'm allowed back there. :gabe: The sports bar up front was nice to eat lunch and start out the day when we got there. They had some pretty high end liquor in there. I've never been to Wheeling (casino) so I can't comment on that one. Edited January 29, 2012 by Trouble Maker

Stay the night in the hotel and get your gamble on. -You wont get robbed -You wont get shot -Your car wont get stolen -You wont get your angus peppered I've evaluated two guys in the past six months that have a connection with Wheeling Downs. One guy got shot in the face when he was being robbed at an intersection near the casino. He is from around here, went out there to gamble, got lost, stopped and asked for directions. While doing so, some guy sneaks around car, pops up, puts gun in his face, and starts demanding money. Scenario went from bad to worse, driver goes WOT in an attempt to flee, gets shot in face, but gets away, but crashes his car in the process. The other guy I evaluated disclosed that he and some "colleagues" have been on the other side of things and been the ones robbing others around that area. He says their M.O. was to look for out of state tags or anyone in a nice car that seemed out of place and find some way to get them to stop so that they could rob them. Not saying any of this to discount what you said. And I'll reiterate that I'm not trying to be all alarmist and be the guy that is like "OMFG LOOK OUT U WILL GETZ LE HIJACKED AND ROBBED AND BEETEN IF U GOES!" I just figured I would share what I've learned, both good and bad about the place. My personal experiences have been much like you described - I never had a single problem there, and I've been there plenty of times. However, I'd be remiss if I didn't in good faith disclose what I've also learned about the criminal element that is present there. Chances are, Ray goes, could get lost a 100 times, and never have a problem.

Trouble Maker
Thanks for the information. Mountaineer was another place we were looking at along with Weirton. While we didn't explore around Mountaineer much, just driving in and out of there it seemed like there was absolutely nothing else to do outside of casino. But if you like to gamble I'm sure you could waste a weekend there, and it is a nice place.
Chadz89GTA
Never heard of ANYONE getting shot in the face, nor a crime ring that goes around looking for out of state tags. I live in Moundsville 10miles south of Wheeling and work in Wheeling and my father works in Bridgeport, OH. I've NEVER heard of anyone getting shot in the face or mugged, that would actually be big news here. Saying Wheeling Island is bad is like saying cotton balls are dangerous. And the funny thing about people looking for "out of state" tags is the island borders OH so everyones out of state there????

Holy fuck, shoot me in the face for trying to be cool and pass along some information. Apparently, because Chadz873644872432 has never heard of what I reported, it didn't occur. This is excellent news, I think. I hope he doesn't hear of anything happening in Hilliard anytime soon, since that's where I live. Ray, sorry I even said anything about what I heard about the crime in the area - it's apparent that I'm completely wrong and just making shit up. Just focus in on me saying that I've been there, I had no problems, and the casino was fine. My attempt to give you all the information I had at my disposal seems to be a recipe for having every West Virginian from here to Huntington log in and talk about how histrionic I am. Nevermind the fact that I qualified what I said more than once in an attempt to avoid misperceptions - apparently people didn't bother to read that. iwashmycar
My parents frequent Hollywood Casino in Cincy. Seem to have a good time everytime. They have gone to Wheeling a couple of times as well, but must like Hollywood better since they go more. Maybe it's closer? I dunno, never been personally. Mountaineer was another place we were looking at along with Weirton. Weirton is a shithole too. I used to live there, my mom still does. It's like wheeling, not overly crime ridden but just a very depressed economy. EDIT: If you go there, stay up on three springs drive. You can drive to mountaineer too, only like 20 mins north of weirton. Hell, Wheeling is only like 30 or so minutes south and you can get the whole wheeling feeling (and maybe herp) while you are there. Never heard of ANYONE getting shot in the face, nor a crime ring that goes around looking for out of state tags. BloodRed
Went for the weekend a few years ago. We stayed in St. Clairsville, Ohio and just drove over. Hotels were much nicer and cheaper in Ohio than over by the Casino. There is a Cabelas store just a short drive from that area too.
coltboostin
Mountaineer IMO is the best in the area to gamble AND have a relaxing weekend. If you want to explore the "area" as well as gamble, then 3 Rivers or Presque Isle should be on your radar. All others are not worth mentioning. ICEMAN1647545504
I went to Wheeling island a few years ago and the area next to the casino is not the greatest but we didn't have any problems. Another place to go is the river boat is Cincy. I have only been here once years ago and from what I can remember it was a fun day. Also Windsor is a fun place to go to and have a good time, gamble and the night life is awesome.

Dr. Pomade
My wife just texted to ask if the roads seemed busy. I told her a guy named Chadz89GTA hadn't mentioned anything about traffic, which means there's nothing to worry about. If he hasn't heard of it, then it never happened.
