starkmaster03
I would like to hear from the guys that Tig weld and what type of welder they would recommend. I'm looking to buy one in the up coming months but have never Tig welded. I'm Mig welder quite a bit working in a shop but would like to learn how to Tig to do my own exhaust and mounting brackets. What should I look for when buying a Tig welder.
lilmiller74
Cant go wrong with a Miller or a Lincoln. Everywhere I have ever worked though has had Millers.
Green Bastard
i used to weld with a miller at work, now we use a lincoln. i preferred the miller.
WheelSpin
Lincoln guy myself, we have a watercooled at work and I've never had problems with it. The miller my buddy has I've tried using a few times and kept having problems with getting it to arc.
lilmiller74
I would go with a water cooled machine just to cover anything you want to weld.

Limitedslip7
I have had a Miller EconoTIG for several years now and never had a single problem with it. Great for smaller jobs. You can pick them up used for ~$1200... or new for ~$1300. Water cooled torches are very nice if you are welding high amperage stuff or welding for extended periods of time. There have been times where I had to wrap another leather glove around my torch just so I could hold it without burning myself. If you're a baller though definitely get one with a water cooled torch, pulse, AC balance adjustment.
Alex L.
I use a Diversion 165. It's an easy welder to use and costs around $1500 brand new with all the accessories. It's rated to 3/16" and welds in both AC and DC. It's a great welder for a hobbyist, someone just learning, or someone doing light(er) production welding. lilmiller74
Yep as he said the water cooled welder has a water line running the the handle and head of the tourch so it keeps it cooler on higher heat or extended period of time jobs. starkmaster03
I found someone selling an "airco 450 amp tig welder bernard water cooler. torch foot pedal tank andgauges other acc. 220 volt". Anybody know anything about these? It is huge and probably overkill but the price seems decent.
AJ
450 amp would have to be 3 phase.
starkmaster03
450 amp would have to be 3 phase. You never responded to if you wanted to sell yours or not and what you had.

starkmaster03
Water cooled syncrowace 250-miller whatever your budget can afford miller. Used even. Looks like I'll be getting this exact model. Cordell and I are off to a road trip tonight to pick it up.
Akula
Here is my suggestion. Take the TIG class at the Columbus Idea Foundry, they have a couple of TIG machines and you can experience different ones and make a better decision. Its like test driving a car. 10phone2
The foundry does not have any upcoming TIG welding classes in December. There are two MIG class, but it's full.

Yea the syncrowave is a great welder. Youll like it. The model you have is an older model but should last. Im hoping to pick up that exact welder for around $700-900 from my employer (but ours dont look new and have thousands of hours on them)
