Need some Linux help

So one of my drives is not booting and I think it might have some sector errors or read errors as it wont boot into windows nor show up in windows when put as a slave drive. It shows up in the BIOS and SMART says its ok and shows the correct size but wont do much else as the read light will constantly stay on when going into windows with the drive. So I am trying to get a ubuntu installation going to see if i can run ddrescue and grab as much data as I can. Now I am new to the whole thing so anyone have any experience that might help me along? or suggestions?

no need to do a full install you can run most recovery utilities from a live cd

 

data recovery is a hit or miss operation most of the time

What he said just run it from a a cd. Does the HD spin up at all?

Plug it into another machine. Might be a controller issue even though BIOS shows it.
