Tractor Posted February 23, 2013 Report Share Posted February 23, 2013 I always wanted to give sailing a try, but even though I grew up along the Ohio River we didn't really see sailboats around much. Then I moved up to Central Ohio and found lots of sailboats. I'm guessing it can actually be done here. Is getting a cheap small sailboat to play around and learn a bit worth it here? I'm going to the Nags Head, NC area this summer and plan on doing a sailboat rental for at least a few hours since my Dad will also be going and he's always wanted to do it as well. Not Brian Posted February 23, 2013 Report Share Posted February 23, 2013 Not quite a sailboat, but I went to the bahamas a couple years ago and you can "rent" (everything was all-inclusive so it was free) little sailing rafts to cruise around in. Super fun, I learned a lot doing that. Doc1647545523 Posted February 23, 2013 Report Share Posted February 23, 2013 (edited) There are lots of decent sailing opportunities in central Ohio, and sailboats can be purchased and maintained cheaply as long as you stay small. Keep in mind that Nags Head itself is on the ocean side of the Outer Banks, and sailing on the ocean is a whole different animal than sailing at Alum Creek. You can rent sailboats on the Sound side of the Outer Banks for an experience closer to what lake sailing is like. Nags Head has some great windsurfing and kiteboarding. As anyone who's seen my trucks knows, I have a hard time keeping things small;-) and if I moved to the ocean I'd probably be shopping for a ship. TimTaylor751647545500 Posted February 24, 2013 Report Share Posted February 24, 2013 Alum Creek has a wednesday night sailboat racing league in the summer that you can pretty much show up for and ask to crew on someone's boat, and they'll let you on. I crewed on a friend's Catalina 22 for a couple seasons before he moved out of state. That is a great boat and can be had or little money, but like any boat, there is a lot to maintain. I was wondering if taking the instruction, then going off and actually returning was something a beginner could even manage. I'll say I've never done it, but I've always been interested and "think" I could figure it out pretty quickly. I guess maybe we'll see. Might be a really entertaining story to come out of it. I learn to sail on Lake Ossipee in NH which is about the same size as Hoover. I started with a Sunfish which is stupidly easy to learn on, and then spent many afternoons in my dad's Laser.
