Need optics suggestions!

Your likely get 10 different ansers from 10 different people on optics but if you can find good deals on a Millet 4x16x50 tacticl riflescope I have one and highly recommend it. A lot of good features. Also a huge fan of the Nikon Series, they have a scope for the .308 round.

i understand that... but ... i noticed a trend with people talking about the Vortex strikefire being a good budget red dot and they were right. i bought one and love it.!!!

Bob...for a .308 good sir you cant skimp on optics. They say you should spend 2x as much on the glass as you do on the gun. With that said I was going to advise you differently on the Bushnell suggested, but decided to look at some reviews first. I was surprised to see some of those scopes on higher powered rifles and hold zero. What I could not find is one review with it on a .308. My advice would be to head to AR15.com and see what those guys are using. there is a link off the main page for Equipment Exchange (for sale section and is an orange link towards the top). There are a couple different categories for optics for sale as well as in depth reviews/suggestions that may fit your needs.

While I am not trying to dissuade you from Bushnell please ensure that your optic will hold a zero on a .308. You may find it difficult to get a solid scope for your application w/o spending more. I personally went with Trijicon and have never looked back. Leupold (aimpoint as well...but have been advised heavily against the newer EOTech...but you are not looking for a red dot so it doesn't even matter) has some killer scopes and if you can find one used for the right price...

I know others will jump in and disagree with me, but I don't play around when it comes to optics as I want to ensure it will perform beyond a shadow of a doubt. I guess I should have asked what the weapon even was? AR10? Rem 700 bolt action?

Good note on the higher caliber and the scope holding zero. I didn't think about that. My uncle has a Simmons brand scope on his .308 and it holds great. Has taken game at 400 and a prairie dog at 525 yards.

I wouldnt spend 2x what I paid for the gun as the gun is an Heckler & Koch SR9/HK91....

so what would be reasonable?

What about a leupold VX1?

Thats a sweet rifle man. Good find. Those are about 2k. You may want to check out hkpro.com as they have some knowledge they can impart. I have seen Tasco quick release scopes on those, but i dont know much about them. If that were mine...Leupold would be my choice, but that is purely personal preference. I usually check with my operator buddies to see what the military is having them use these days (i know most buy their own, but usually after having been field tested hard). If its good enough for them in theaters of war then it is good enough for me. So far the consensus from them being Leupold/Triji/aimpoint.

Again...nice find. My next adventure is a .308/7.62.

Save up and get the optic that was made for it... the Hensoldt FERO Z24.

Hard to beat the field of view and the crystal clear optics on these.

If you really have to stay under $300, I'd go for a Nikon Buckmaster series.

the seller was also selling a Hensoldt with it on the claw mount.... I passed. what would be a good deal on one?

I mis-spoke. it was a Karl Kaps

If it's complete with all accessories and in good condition, $500 would be a good price. You can get "new old stock" examples for $700, so anywhere between $500 and $700 may be reasonable.

I've never heard of Karl Kaps.

I would go to Cabelas and go look through their selection. Try out some budget glass and look through some more expensive stuff so you can see where the extra money goes. They have a huge selection to look through.

Go to their products list of sport optics, they normally have good prices.

SWFA also has good prices as well.

EDIT: I would put an Aimpoint T1 or H1 on it and call it a day for 300 yard shooting. Larue has them for good prices with a mount.
