zeitgeist57
Do any of the 944 forums talk about an aftermarket catch-can as an option? Some of the Z06 Corvettes have a similar setup... Can't imagine an OEM AOS would be any cheaper than an aftermarket aluminum one...
cybe
Welcome back, race fans. So, I've been kinda busy. http://i.imgur.com/2b6IRX4.jpg?1 But things have settled, and I'm back in the game. Got me a vacuum check valvey thing and some grommets. Price is absurd. http://i.imgur.com/2GdsV8T.jpg?1 und hoses http://i.imgur.com/0h3B0eB.jpg?1 vroom, vroom: http://i.imgur.com/uZDxay5.jpg?1 This is my rear main seal installer. There are many like it, but this one is mine. Doubles as a candle holder. http://i.imgur.com/dOU5Mqs.jpg?1 And special flywheel lock tool: http://i.imgur.com/RwoQhrM.jpg?1 Aaand some clutch. http://i.imgur.com/iv5l4q3.jpg?
Crossle
LOL, the sense of humor is fantastic. Amazing that no french fry was found in the automotive archaeology segment. This is a good build for people to see, the motor is pretty interesting for those who have never seen one apart.
cybe
These are the tie-rod ends I intended to use; http://i.imgur.com/275j4Bs.jpg?1 As you can see, they are Chinese and of poor quality. And didn't fit. http://i.imgur.com/Qw7mT41.jpg?1 Fortunately, I am a dolt, as evidenced here: All your tensioners are 180 degrees out of alignment. More on my mental prowess later. Off to the parts store I go, to see what else they've got. Found some Moog parts, Hecho en Estados Unidos - They're nice, serviceable units with grease fittings and better casting. With Castle nut, cotter-pin, etc. But they're in different boxes? And the parts differ from eachother - one has been returned previously. Maybe by a 944 owner as daft as myself. http://i.imgur.com/EsAPm1P.jpg?1 http://i.imgur.com/fumNs9M.jpg?2 Of course, these "don't fit" also... when you try to install them umop apisdn. :banghead:

cybe
[crosspost from my rennlist thread] Made some progress! This motor seems larger than when i took it out. It's tight quarters in there. I tried lots of different angles. http://i.imgur.com/Ny8UCNe.jpg?1 (No..) http://i.imgur.com/95P2yTH.jpg?1 (No . . ) http://i.imgur.com/X92s13Z.jpg?1 (No...) .... Shoehorn? http://i.imgur.com/LD7kyqz.jpg?1 Each time (3 in total) I got pretty close, but could never get everything to line up and seat nicely. I got down to about a half an inch of gap in this area on my best attempt. So, I figure the best way to put it back in .. is the way I took it out. http://i.imgur.com/uFWX7So.jpg Good thing I got that nice clutch alignment tool. http://i.imgur.com/JKUpDCg.jpg?1 I ended up having to take down the cross member, control arms, etc to get things moving in the right direction. And she's finally seated! http://i.imgur.com/jNM48sJ.jpg\ http://i.imgur.com/3kvgFi0.jpg Nice and shiny! In retrosect, I could've waited to put the manifolds on. But so pretty. http://i.imgur.com/RQY37rC.jpg?1 Pics for clicks. http://i.imgur.com/g01HHdZ.jpg?1 What a job. I ended up with a busted eyebrow (jack handle) a scarred back (underside of shelf) and a ponytail that adsorbed six times its weight in grime. http://i.imgur.com/9qaisSW.jpg?1 (If you see me around, say Hi!) Next day - with the big stuff out of the way, I continued on at an easier pace. Connecting up the larger vacuum stuff. Idle stabilizer valve, AOS, Air-box, various. http://i.imgur.com/yqJUeb3.jpg?1 http://i.imgur.com/4NgcoJe.jpg?2 http://i.imgur.com/i0F0dvD.jpg Soon I get to look more closely at the electricals. cybe
Mini-update crosspost Injectors came back from rebuild, looking pretty nice: http://i.imgur.com/UvOMJ4m.jpg?1 Got those snugged into place http://i.imgur.com/JfEVCHw.jpg?1 Did a little plumbing http://i.imgur.com/ihw2NY9.jpg?1 and now i'm facing an electrical nightmare. I should've run some of this before putting the intake manifold back on, I'll probably hafta remove it. http://i.imgur.com/Q7OCUvp.jpg?1 Bonus points .. tell me what you see: http://i.imgur.com/zvXL5Gp.jpg?

Toph6888
This build is beyond awesome. Mad props for tackling it yourself headfirst. Thats the way I did it too, I feel you get a lot out of it vs just buying a car. Keep up the good work!

cybe
Last stop, I removed the front brakes and hubs to tidy them up. Those are now here: Dust sheilds: http://i.imgur.com/kzC06GM.jpg Hubs: http://i.imgur.com/p0YDrfl.jpg Races: http://i.imgur.com/jNVS7j1.jpg Piston and pot were pretty funky: http://i.imgur.com/og0oCV8.jpg And what's old is new: http://i.imgur.com/dmTRw0L.jpg I've got some leaks to chase - power steering fluid from the rack, and coolant from the large hose exiting the water pump. The car will start and run/rev, but die at idle. It's open-headered at the moment. I see the oil pressure gauge peg at 5 bar while it runs .. I'm not sure if that's what I'm supposed to see, but I caught a post suggesting I swap the leads at the sensor, so I'll try that. I saw this example, which keeps me motivated: http://i.imgur.com/dpODXlD.jpg?

cybe
Well, the guy came out - after an hour, he'd spent 4 blanks on the job, but I guess something's wrong with the cylinders. He asked that I remove the lock cylinders so he can diagnose or possibly re-key them in order to make a single master key for the car. In his defense, it's entirely possible that the locks are damaged, as I received the car with no key and the ignition switch dangling beneath the dash. Hopefully he can re-key it or whatever. He didn't charge for the trip and time.
zeitgeist57
That's nice of him. Any thought to a hidden kill switch for the ignition, and just using a push-button starter relay?
