METAL WORKERS - Egress Window grate needed

As part of my home remodel, my wife and I had an egress window installed at the front of our house. The opening is appx 46" by 44", surrounded by capstone pavers. Fortin Ironworks wants a flippin' fortune to make a metal grate.

Ideally, we want as much light to come in as we can. I'd like to have a metal grid ( without a plexiglas cover) that could support the errant footstep or rodent...it's a decent fall. Any suggestions for someone that can do this would be GRATE. (/horatio)

Fortin wants to charge me a few hundred for the grate. Zoinks, scoob!

At this point I'd be inclined to get some angle iron and metal grating...AND BUY MYSELF A WELDER. Paid for in full with the first job! :)

In the event of another fire

 Ugh...perish the thought...

What is the landscaping around the walls going to be? maybe put bushes around it. Or little decorative fence.

It faces west, and we would like to get as much sunlight as we can, as we've finished that room in the basement and want the kids to play in it. The amount of afternoon sunlight down there now is amazing; for being a cold, dark basement for the past 52 years, now you can be down there without turning on a light.

Therefore, any landscaping will be low, like some small hostas.

Any thoughts to polycarbonate or plexiglas? Something custom, maybe with a couple of bars across the middle to provide some support if you step on it?
