Johny Utah
I called Bobby Layman to get a price to change a front wheel hub assembly on my 2001 Grand prix gtp. They said 648.00 plus tax. Is that a good price?
STEVE-O
No not at all you can get them way cheaper and ya not a hard job to do at all
POS VETT
Wow. Is the wheel bearing/hub in the format of an assembly ? If so, that's a very short work.
Johny Utah
I don't have the time to do it myself.
SinisterSS
I believe that bearing has the ABS wheel speed sensor built in, that's why it's so costly. if it is that style then there should be 4 bolts that hold it to the knuckle, then the REAL issue is getting the bearing out, since you said its a 2001 I can assure you that its rusted into place, you'll need a heavy slide hammer, penetrating oil and possible torches to pull it, BUT you might get lucky and it'll slide right out with no problems. POS VETT
The most expensive price for a hub assembly at RockAuto is $235 for the rear and $165 for the front.
Johny Utah
They must be charging a lot for labor then.
SinisterSS
advance auto parts $90-140: http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/PartSearchCmd?storeId=10151&catalogId=10051&pageId=partTypeList&suggestion=&actionSrc=Form&langId=-1&searchTerm=front+wheel+bearing&vehicleIdSearch=49967&searchedFrom=header#
Johny Utah
I just called Advanced they are 140.00 but there are two versions and you have to take it off to see if it is a metal clip or a plastic clip. The dealership is charging 390.00 for the hub and 2 hours of labor to put it on. Is the oem hub the dealership has better then what advance has though? starkmaster03
Advance shows Moog only. I normally recommend Timken bearings. Autozone has both the steel and plastic Timken's for $143.99.
POS VETT
At RockAuto, there are at least two AC Delco versions; the prices I quoted were for the more expensive version. The Moog and Timken versions are cheaper.
SinisterSS
there was a place called ADW? they sell GM parts only and for a fraction of what dealerships charge, not sure if they're still around or not. the newer Acura bearings are similar, Trust me they are a HUGE PITA if they're rusted in the knuckle. Cordell
Get a Timken or AcDelco, don't waste your time with the cheap shit at Advanced or Autozone. Trust me the wheel bearings may not last long to begin with, but you'll typically get more life out those two brands. Install usually isn't horrible on those cars, even rusted they can be removed without excessive beating. The price is even a little high for a dealership, the hub is likely almost $400 (dealership price, cheaper elsewhere) and labor should only be about 1.2 hours, putting you around $550. It can be done cheaper obviously.

They last 4-6 months at best with normal driving usage. Just saw you got it fixed lol. Hopeful you went ACDelco.
