Otis Nice
Buddy gave me a beat up 2000 Elantra. Only had 141K when I got it. Runs pretty well. After new tires and a tune up it's truckin' along. Only problem is this: When I go to fill 'er up with the ol' petrol I can only pump about .25-.5 gallons before it kicks off. Did my research and found out that the vent valves get fouled up causing the air escaping from the fuel tank to come back up the neck. Replace the valve today but it's still doing the same thing. Any clue as to what might be causing this?

Otis Nice
Did you try a different pump Yup. Multiple pumps, multiple stations, over the course of the last 2 weeks. Tried 2 diff pumps at 2 diff stations today after replacing the vent valve.

I wouldn't think a new one would be bad.
Cordell
Remove the valve and see if it works right. I'd bet it won't, need to find out where the restriction is that is keeping the tank from venting.

Ran a siphon hose into the tank via the filler neck and all was clear, then replaced the vent valve. Guess I just need to do some trial and error to find it out. Hoping dad or someone on here might be able to take a look or have insight as to something that has caused them a similar problem in the past. Farkas
When pumping don't fill as fast, and don't put the neck in all the way. The vapors just need somewhere to go.. I have this issue with my echo lol.

I have this issue with my echo lol. Tried that too. Helps a little bit but not much. I hardly had the nozzle in (save the jokes, lol) and only pulled the lever enough to get the gas flowing but it still did the same thing. criitter7
I'm putting money on charcoal canister like everyone else says. Is the cel on? Or do you know if you have good power and ground at the plug for valve?

Or do you know if you have good power and ground at the plug for valve? The valve is normally off and venting. Best way to check the circuit is to put a test light between the terminals. Unless you have a scan tool to command it on it shouldn't light. This would be working normally.

Or do you know if you have good power and ground at the plug for valve? No CEL. Everything else seems to be working great. The valve is normally off and venting. Best way to check the circuit is to put a test light between the terminals. Unless you have a scan tool to command it on it shouldn't light. This would be working normally. Thanks. I'll try to get to dads and use his test light to check.
