wnaplay1647545503
My son has been driving for 2 years now and has had no accidents or tickets. We switched insurance companies when we added him 2 years ago and the rate was very fair, surprisingly fair. Now my premiums have tripled and every other company seems to price us out in the same ball park. If I remove my son from my policy my premium drops to 1/3 of what it is now. We have had no accidents or tickets in many many years. Is there a way around this issue? Can I get him his own policy? He has his own car and since theres 3 cars in the household and 3 licensed drivers hes automatically added as a fulltime driver. Is there something I am not considering others have found to maneuver paying so much?
mrs.cos
My dad always made me pay for my part of the insurance. If i wanted to drive i had to afford it just like he did. D Does he have good grades discount or do they offere discounts for exstensive driver training (like if he took the mid ohio safety course)
Mensan
Your policy most likely adds him to the most expensive car on your policy. Call safe auto and ask about liability only on his own, cheap, used car.

MrMeanGreen
It drops TO 1/3 of the current rate. His son is worth 2/3 of the current policy premium. I take it you didn't do well in mathematical story questions? :gabe:
AudiOn19s
completely normal. I wrote insurance rating code for 10 years young male drivers are the highest risk category. Only way around it is to basically be dishonest to your agent / provider and then hope you don't get caught up in that if you have to make a claim. If he moves out and gets his own policy and pays for his own insurance you can drop him from your policy but as long as he's under your roof most companies will insist that he's on your policy as a driver even if you split his car to a different policy. Buck531
Does he have the "good student discount"? That will shave a % off of his costs. If I were to have my son (he's 20 now) on his own policy he'd be paying over $130 a month for full coverage. Right now he pays about $40-45 a month. (yep. he pays me every month for his phone (also on my plan) and his car insurance and a few other things.
wnaplay1647545503
Mom and I have always agreed we would pay the bills until he graduates which will be this year. He turned 18 in august but because we held him back a year in kindergarten hes an adult but just as immature as his friends a year younger, always has been. Perhaps not my best choice to pay for everything and I am sure a lot of my own experiences played into those choices. Doesnt really sound like from an insurance standpoint theres much I can do other than wait until he gets his own policy.
Buck531
Does he have a job? btw, my son still has the "good student discount" even though he graduated last year. Edited November 13, 2013 by Buck531
wnaplay1647545503
So far no, he is currently looking. Graduating was always the priority.
Buck531
I guess I'll ask again.. what are his grades like? If he gets I think a 3.0 or higher he gets a discount. I just had to fax my agent one of his quarters grades back when he was in HS.
