gravedigger
I have a 95, my cable was extremely hard to pull.I replaced it, $15-20.I took it off and lubed cable ,that improved it slightly. So I just bought a new one. No problems since. It probably the original cable.

With little to no resistance, it probably pulls smoothly. A new one is a good start, especially since they're pretty cheap.
